Good Morning!

Post by Jaye » Fri May 20, 2016 11:07 pm

Good evening. Brought home two rent-a-chicks for my broody, and she thanked me with an extra hard peck when I was removing her wooden eggs after tucking her new babies under her. I know she's ecstatic, but doesn't like to let on that she appreciates my efforts. I had them in a (well ventilated) box on the passenger seat on the ride home, and turned on the heated seat - it worked like a charm.
Life is good. :-)
Love the whip-poor-will song, JimW. Haven't heard it here yet. Soon, I hope.

Good evening. Locked down eggs tonight. Have 6 Araucana, 10 BBS Ameraucana, 7 Serama, 16 Easter Egger and sadly only 2 Isbar. Need to find new DNA for them.

Also built a cage around one of our broody hens (she has decided the only place to sit is in the wood wagon) and gave her 8 beautiful blue eggs. It's amazing how relaxed they become once they have a nest to sit on.

Moved the 15 teenagers out of their cage and into the back room. Some fantastic colours in that hatch. Love watching them grow.

The 22 preteens (includes a Rhodebar pair I bought) are settling in nicely to their new cage. One chick has a really unusual comb. I'll try and post pictures tomorrow.

Frogs and toads are singing. Beautiful night.
Have a good one.

Best of luck with the hatch redninja. If any of my 3 Isbar eggs hatch I will let you know, not sure I plan on keeping any of them.

Thanks Jim.
Good luck with the hatch. I think Derek's line are from the 2013 imports. Mine are from the 2011. Keep me posted.

Good evening, it was a great day out there today, vehicle was in the shop getting fixed so stuck at home and did some gardening. Planted 2 varieties of pumpkins, indian corn, radishes, some beets and prepared a couple more raised beds for planting this week.

My hovabator is full and holding tempature and humidity in my basement much better than in my classroom. I have about a dozen turkey eggs due to hatch in my classroom Tuesday/Wednesday. I have issues with temperature and humidity during incubation combined with the turner being unplugged for a few days, so not holding out much hope for a good hatch, but time will tell.

I decided to check my broody turkeys and their eggs tonight, I have 4 jennys sitting on 1 bunch of eggs. I carefully lifted each girls off the eggs and candled a bunch of them. There are a total of 26 eggs I candled about half of them before the jennies climbed back on. Every egg I candled was fertile, though in various stages of development, a few looked like they are getting close to hatching maybe some time next week.

Hope everyone is having a good May 24 weekend.

Whip poor will singing here last night, I absolutely love them. I live in a valley and when I was a child the calls used to echo throughout the night. Now it can be years before I get to hear one.

Hey Jim, I gave up with taking the egg turner out of my hova, so i leave the turner in and running (with the racks removed) and the temp stays in line.

Well, yesterday was a good day, eggs hatching like crazy! Got a real mixture of colours in there!! They are so cute. I will move these 17 outside this morning, after I get the feed and water in (don't want to feed the mice too early in the brooder box), and move the 10 or so still in the bator. No new ones overnight, that I could see. There should be 14 eggs still in there to hatch, although I know there will be some shrink-wrap/dry holed ones in there. You can always tell, when you see a hole in the egg, a pure white membrane, sunken in, and looks dry. I vowed I was NOT helping those out, and then watching poor crippled chicks struggle to live, and ultimately need to be put down. I have saved some in the past, and they were perfect, but not doing it this time.

Got way more onions then I got in yesterday, so I want to make a new patch for them. There are SO many weeds in the garden!! Sheesh.

Had a new calf yesterday too. A friend came and weeded for me, while I was planting onions, and I knew she was calving. She wanted to see it born, but by the time we made it back to the barn, it was there. A huge heifer, I thought for sure was a bull calf from the looks of it. I am sure next spring these cows will be grateful to be birthing smaller angus calves. After this July's pick of heifers from the feedlot, there will be plenty of younger females out of the blonde crosses, to provide the bigger carcasses Gary thinks he wants/needs. Those bigger cattle eat alot more tho.

I have alot of broccoli plants I started to put out, but this damn midge just destroys them, and no heads. I just haven't had the energy to plant and cover them with this cloth stuff I've had in the greenhouse for years. It was a reject from Dams, they gave me, and I am sure the sun has it brittle now. But will check it out.

I also want to get the potatoes in. I cut them, put them on newspaper on the porch, covered them with newspaper to dry, and they ended up rotting on the cut side. WTH? I'll check them out too. If not, I have plenty of octopus's in the back room to plant, lol.

So, I'd better get outside. Plenty of grass to cut too.

Glad I have two more days off the bus!!! Even tho I only work 3 hours a day, lol.
