That's what I guessed too - cloudberry (AKA bakeapple). But looking at it again, it does seem a bit dark for Cloudberry, plus I don't think it's all that common here, which was one of the hints Farrier gave. In fact, I've never seen any in these parts.
Could it be something as obvious as crab apple?

I am doing something wrong. I have tried to reply to everyone here, but its not going. Except to Killerbunny it did. Martin, please tell me what I am doing wrong. I also tried to send to admin, doesn't go to outbox, no draft, just gone pfht! What an I doing wrong?
Hint. Not a tree fruit, planted every year. Probably in half the gardeners and all the fruit stands in season.
