Merlin it is.
Thanks for the link Al, now I know He is suitable for Ladies, to hunt with.
Somehow I think I would have a problem convincing him/her to cooperate. :)

WOW that's TINY! i was thinking bigger than that.....it does have the same markings as a coopers, but if it was that small then not a coopers....coopers are about the size of a large crow or smaller raven....i have never seen one of those down here...ever...neato!

Sometime I think I could do without all that interesting wildlife

You may remember, we had a hawk attack in 2011 and I was pretty sure this isn't the same hawk, because in 2011 I met that bird close up and personal and it was about the size of a crow, thats when we put up the netting on the runs with grow out young birds.
This year, too many things were different, the call, the flight, size and mainly the shape.
If the link Al sent is right, they also hunt in a different way and smaller birds, so perhaps the chickens are safe/er?

A couple of days ago there were two sparrows having a discussion on my driveway. All of a sudden in swooped a kestrel, picked up one of the sparrows, and took it onto a fence post and ate it. I guess everyone needs to watch for attacks. :)
