Yesterday the 4th egg hadn't hatched. I took it away and decided to open it. I didn't want to throw an egg out and then it hatch in the garbage. Jeeze. My subconscious would of haunted me for decades. The chick had a fully developed body, legs, feet, nails, feathers, wings etc., but the skull/head didn't make it to production. It was like the brain was on the outside and there wasn't a beak or facial structure to be found. Very odd, yet very interesting.
It was full grown too. Squeeze into the shell.

Broody mom taking her babes on an exploration. She stopped for a dust bath and then back to exploring. Amazing how much energy these little guys have.
I lost 1 hatched chick (weak and died) and the other chick went back to his bigger group. But she's happy with her 3 strong babies. I just love how they wander a bit to far and she cluckles and they come running back, spring loaded :). She clucks and they jump up to grab what is in her mouth. They found worms, grubs and those little ones are oinks!! Whoever has a treat hanging out of their mouth gets chased by the other 2. They Suck a whole worm back. They're little tiny size, slurps up a worm and they keep looking for more. Impressive.

I am just in awe of this broody mom. She is so tolerant. The other chicks I currently have, well about a dozen of them end up following her around once they discover she is out and about and she scratches and offers for them all and clucks for everyone. Anyone gets lost and starts with their chirps she clucks them until they find her, and I mean not even her hatched babies, or her adopted wheaten any one of the 41 chicks in total.
I lose so much time just watching her with the chicks.

Watching a good momma with her babies is a happy place for me every time, it never gets old seeing those hens do their thing, and just be so happy to be moms.

I catch myself just watching my broody just hatched turkey mom. They are the best. Way better than a fishtank. Way way better than tv. Easily adds a half hour to chores. Lol the good ones are keepers thats for sure.
