Hydrometer

Post by Colleen Kinzie » Sat Apr 02, 2016 5:53 pm

Not sure if it's even spelled right!! Lol. To measure humidity
What kind do you use, what is the cost, how accurate is it and where did you get it?
Wow I'm full of questions today
Actually in panic mode because I have 3 different ones and you guessed it they all show different readings(one is built into styrofoam incubator)
I did the test on wet paper towel. The 2 went to 100% humidity???? Go figure
Today is day 18 for my eggs
Thanks everyone

I have three as well, one is the Incubator warehouse plug n play hygrostat. It measures humidity and controls a humidifier. I also have a 10 dollar Accu-Rite indoor thermometer/hygrometer from Home Hardware and a 30 dollar Accu-rite remote indoor/outdoor thermometer/hygrometer also from Home Hardware. They all measure about the same. The black one is the $10 dollar one, the taller white one is the indoor/outdoor with the sensor laying flat in front of it. The one with the red readout is the Incubator Warehouse one, the most expensive (I think it was about 60 bucks US- can't remember for sure).
Are yours all reasonably close, or way out? You could always use the one in the middle and assume that's close....... There's a way to calibrate using a wet sock/ dry thermometer but I've never bothered doing that.

The one on the incubator is reading 52%
Ran it dry for the first 18 days and it read 48 or 49?
The one inside is a little $10.00 one from CTC
Pic below
The other one I had was a house one with all three different things on it barometer thermometer and hydrometer
All 3 were way different in readings yet when I put the 2 on wet paper towel they both read 100%
I'm soooooo confused :dunno:

hmmmmmm? im guna bet the blue one is accurate especially since you say the window has some condensation on it... it may be a bit high. when are they due? if they are due in 3 days or so I might just leave it... it should come down a bit and then spike back up when the chicks start hatching.

fingers crossed!!!!

I think what might have happened is that the gauge got water logged by putting it right on top of the paper towel. If you suspend it up from the floor i think you'll get a better reading. It's too late to do anything for this hatch, but take out the gauge and dry it out, then for next time try locating it at egg level.
When I buy those gauges from stores and there's a bunch of them, I look at all of them and buy one of the ones that reads consistent with the rest. sometimes the odd one is way off.
