Good Morning!

Post by Farrier1987 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 8:27 pm

Ah, Sunday evening. Time to relax and catch up on some missed stuff here. Had a visit form PTO head office. Kathy and Martin were kind enough to supply me with a mix of hatching eggs, and a new roo. French Marans. We weren't told his name, so today, will a great agglomeration of family around for the christening of the goats, he was also christened Charlamange. And no, that is not mispelled. He might have flees. And its French.

Had a friend with a sign in his yard said beware of viscous dog. I told him he had misspelled it. He looked at me and said "No, no I didn't. He don't run too fast." So I mostly just accept speling as correct if its understood.

Goat babies doing good. Cuteness oozes out of their very beings. Disbudded today. I don't like horns. Not a nice job but necessary for around my place. Hoping the trauma will have worn off by tomorrow or next day and will do the job for the rest of their lives. Burning hair and skin stinks and my babies cry. Not nice, but it is done.

Had an agglomeration of inlaws and outlaws here today. Got them to help me pout up my new seven foot chainlink fence. Dam goats were getting up on the horses back and jumping over. That should fix the buggers. Saved the dehorning til after they were gone because I would have been badly chastised for being mean. So I wouldn't have done it and would have had to invite my sisterinlaw down in a year to get whacked by a young billy goat and then explain why I wanted to dehorn but she wouldn't let me. Like the horns, sisterinlaws can be a darn nuisance. She arrived mad because she didn't know the bridge on her shortcut here was out and I should have told her and she went the wrong way and had to go way around and I should have told her. Life is tough for some people that let it. I kissed her goodbye with real joy in my heart.

Nephew thought we should butcher a chicken, lots to eat on that big one with the claws on the sides of his legs he said. I tried to explain that that was a rooster two years old, and might not be choice dining. That all the chicken from the store is probably 8 to 12 weeks old, and this guy would not be the same. He didn't believe me, but thats city folk. Maybe we will make him some fried chicken next time he comes, special for him that rooster. See if I can make a believer out of him.

Got three hens setting right now. One of the neighbors wants one. Sold her for $50, they will pick her up the day after she hatches and take them home, she is on a dozen of my olive eggs. Will help buy feed for the others.

Life is good. Take care all.

Lol. I promise roo didnt have fleas or fleece or flees but charlemange seems to fit-so flees it is!!...lol. he does have feathered legs-maybe that can double for flees in a pinch...might help him get along a bit faster than a non-feathered legged boy...he will be ruling the roost in no time i bet. I actually had a couple names for him but shouldnt put them on the board...lol. he was fiercely loyal to his harem....
Those goats were real cute but...NO GOATS!!! Lol. Scarred for life i am....lol.
I could so see them getting out via mini(not a pony)horse lol. I think one could fence for life and never be ahead of a goat. As long as they dont practice deep sea diving off the south end of the property!

Well lightning west of us now and thundering out. Got all the birds set up into new breeding groups-all set for the summer..should be getting first final generations on my welbars and rhodebars this year!! Time to go rest my back and ignore the lightning...still dont enjoy storms since an up close and personal lightning incident a few years back....hope everyone has a great night. Good luck with those goats colin!! They definitely have you and catherine and not-a-pony-minihorse and chickens all out numbered. Lol

Finally finished fixing meat bird tractor, and building standing quail hutch. Beautiful day yesterday. Hope all enjoyed the day with their families. Xx

Al- Good looking kids you have there! Enjoy them today. Mine has a PA day Friday too. Too windy here today for any outdoor play, but more excuses for cuddles instead!

Thanks Bobbi! post some pics of your tractor! do you allready have quail? what kind? I have Jumbos from Perry, but i only kept the biggests ones over winter, 3 hens and 2 cocks, they are all over a Lb! and they arnt laying yet.... grrrrrr!

ya its a mess out there today! I hope all the trenches I built have kept the run n coop from flooding but i still didnt make a trench for the pond yet. maybe I'll brave the weather n go do that and maybe not LOL.

I finally set the new ducks free. it took all the birds a little while to settle there differences but no blood was drawn. its crazy watching one species stick up for another species such as a turkey sticking up for the call duck drake even though the tiny call duck started the fight against the massive Pekin drake. that lil call duck has some serious attitude. hes so cute LOL. But withing a couple hours everything settled down, no blood was drawn and all is well.

Have a great day all!

Had to let poor little Muppet go home this am. Such a little fighter though until this weekend when he'd just had enough.

Good Morning!

Morning everyone!

aw...sorry KB....

well, that is one WINDY day out there today! and holy moly rain last night....all night. :rain: our weather station says almost 27 mm-since midnight. it started raining before then, so probably over 30 mm now....wow. there were waves in the field this morning. actual waves. and one very very miserable looking raccoon standing in the middle of the field....soaked and muddy. i *almost* felt sorry for it. almost. sure were some awesome thunderstorms last night too! all night! lots of lightning, i kept waiting for the hydro to go out, given that i have one bator locked down and another for lock down on the 2nd....but it didn't...not yet anyways!

Moved the younger dark cornish out to the barn yesterday evening, just before all the rain started. They were happily roosted on this tiny "little bird" roost that i put in, it's about 6 inches off the floor. LOL. pretending to be big birds. Took them a while to get used to having the other bigger birds in the next pen. Soon i'll move them in with the other cornish. Incredible how fast they grow. Good looking birds too. Have about 20 cornish eggs in the incubator, locked down yesterday, along with some turkeys. I'm trying the 1C less for the cornish too, see if that helps with them. It sure worked well for the turkeys....we'll see! :xfingers: i think they're "due" on Wednesday. The other turkeys in the brooder are growing like mad. and are they ever friendly! there's one strutting already at the ripe old age of 3 weeks....almost the size of a grapefruit. LOL. The royals are just starting to get black feather tips....hopefully there are some without any pencilling, and i can move these lines forward this year. I didn't get any red palm kids in the last hatch, but there are a few in the next, so hopefully i'll get a couple more girls. i'll have to take a quick look at porter's turkey site to see what the one stripy poult i have will be....

and martin helped me seal up the loft to keep the starlings out! yay! and this morning there were NO BIRDS (other than my chickens) up in the loft! whoohoo! i really hate when the starlings nest and then the mites from the nest get everywhere, and it's constant dusting all summer. Not to mention the starling poop everywhere! they had built a nest in the one corner and i just dusted the entire nest LOL. then martin figured out they were flying up from the horse stall below!!! up through this tiny hole in the floor where it meets the wall metal. so that got plugged with a piece of wood. yay! and same on the other side in the other corner of the loft. then i put up a couple pieces of metal, and a door :-) hopefully we didn't miss any spots....

Pulled up all the dead asparagus stalks and sunflower stalks that were still standing in the garden yesterday, preparation for tilling...i need to rip the fence out (what is left of it) and refence it this year. i may just use the cultivator to rip up the garden dirt a bit....i don't think there's much hope of my back surviving the rototiller. and i haven't found a tow behind rototiller that i like yet....plus i think my ATV needs help with a clutch plate. hm....oh well. i still need to get the manure in, and then turn it in....there are 2 big spots that NEED tilling...they were fallow last year, and this year i want to plant them....so. amazing how fast the grass can move into those areas.

well, hope everyone stays dry, and doesn't blow away today! have a great easter monday!!!!
