New Girl Update

Post by Rhonda » Sun Mar 06, 2016 3:15 pm

Thought it may be time to update on the new little flock. I am pleasantly surprised how well they are doing anf how they have settled in.

Their naked skin does not look as red as it did, maybe because I never put any more Stop Pick on it. Their feathers are staring to fill in so they are looking less naked. I have been feeding them BOSS and cat food to boost the protein.

They have stopped being terrified of me! This seems to also help to have stopped the picking...when I first got them they would pile on top of each other against the wall to get away from me and I would see them peck at each other. Now some of them are still wary of me but at least half look forward to me coming in and have lost their fear. They look forward to what treats they get and one jumps up and pecks the water jug if they run out before i get out there. The white one sees me coming and waits at the door for me. Even though I have hit her with the door many times! She has earned herself a name. She is the friendliest and of course being the only white one the easiest to pick out :chicken peck2: She is Camilla...not named after price Charles' wife but after Gonzo's girlfriend...you Muppet fans will know!

I did have some eggs eaten again today but I was late getting out again and did see who it was, so if I have to deal with her I will. They are producing more than we can eat anyway. Need to get my oyster shell dug out of the barn today, that may help.

I was very happy last night. Came home from shopping after dark and when I peeked in to do my afternoon egg collection everyone was roosting!! I take that as a good sign! :chicken_dance:

Glad to hear all is well, don't assume the one that was eating the egg, was the culprit who broke it, she might just have been the last one to the party. ;)
I have caught 3 hens having a go at an egg on the ground, presumably broken, as egg eating hasn't been an issue here, and I swear they looked guilty , I only went to check what they had because of the way they looked, sort of like kids playing with something they shouldn't have.

Some quick shots. Camilla...who was so in my face it was hard to get a pic of the others. Still looking a little scruffy, but better. Some bum shots to show the fuzz coming back in.

BTW my egg eating thing turned out to be a thin shelled girl coming back in to lay. Seems to have stopped now. Tricky when one is quicker to figure it out than the others!

New Girl Update

i found a great way to find the egg eaters....i haven't gotten eggs from my wheaten ameraucanas in probably 3 months now. the moult is over, i was out there puttering around friday evening, heard the one girl lay, but only found shell!!! argh! so yesterday, after another 2 days of finding nothing, and giving them a roll out nest box and finding YOLK in the nest box...um....i took an egg i could sacrifice. rolled it across the coop floor....IMMEDIATELY one girl rushed over and tried to break it. so out she goes....did it again, and the next egg eater swooped in like a hawk (she actually managed to stomp it before i could scoop her up!). so out she went.....got another egg, rolled it right into the middle of the other 4 birds, and they just looked at it and went back to scratching....so. this trick worked for me in the past, so fingers crossed i've nabbed the eaters this time too. every other pen i am getting at least 1 egg a day. feeling hopeful that i might start getting blue eggs again soon. LOL.

rhonda, camilla was my favorite on the muppets. she didn't appear nearly enough. LOL They're looking awesome!
OC, i think you are right. they NEED him...not want...NEED!
