My F.I.L has a new(er) ford truck. I hate it. The blind spots are enormous even with the stupid park assist cameras, and it guzzles fuel if you put weight in the bed (like 6 sacks of feed), AND it slips on slush in 4 x 4 while my older truck with bald tires does not. My old(er, 2002 vs 2013) truck will pull anything, the newer one I wouldn't even try, I might break something. Not saying it's junk, just like anything there are good ones and bad ones I'm sure...but the style switch to "bigger is better" is not a good thing.

I dont think the truck consumer is being well served...we tend to forget, it's a truck...using the 1/2 ton as an example, all its rated for is a half ton...its a frame (sorta) with a box on top, 4 wheels, a motor and a cab...the only thing thats changed in 40 years really, are the bells and whistles in the cab for the comfort of the target buyer, which is the urbanite who doesn't really need a truck but wants one, and the fuel economy of the engine...they can crow about everything elae but its still a truck...the old ones could tow..so can the new ones..the prices of the new ones are just plain stupid...highway robbery if you ask me, but thats just my opinion...as I see it, the biggest problem at the moment is the Super reliance on the computers onboard...just a nightmare waiting to happen...don't say i didn't warn ya...lol

yup I think some of the best vehicles were built in the mid to late nineties, just enough tech to make the engines really fuel efficient and able to turn that fuel into lots of HP. not to many bells or whistles and definitely not an elaborate computer system that when senses a faulty wheel sensor shuts the engine off abruptly. im honestly not a fan of anything new but am a fan of GM. and oh if I buy a v8 i expect it to be a v8 all the time.

the engine in my truck is GMs best designed engine with over 50 years of engineering. 5.7L Vortec 350, they made it perfect, tonnes of power and as fuel efficient as a big motor can be. lasts forever, 450 000+ kms on mine and its still a %100 original engine that's now 20 years old. 1999 was for the most part the last year they produced them. I guess they were just to reliable.

Sandy does your new truck have AFM, active fuel managment? if so I highly recommend you get yourself a range modual that plugs into the obd2 port and only disables the afm, saving the motor from the dreaded lifter collapse..... it does not void any warranty and wont leave any sign it was plugged in. one of the best $200 upgrades anyone with a gm afm motor can make.

In 2003 Ford had 3 v8 engines. The small one was fantastic (4.6L i think) and it was famous for fuel consumption and power. A buddy had one: 8L/100 km on the highway, better than many cars. He loaded up the back with hunting stuff and a trailer w two 4 wheelers from Ottawa to Kapuskasing and back (moose hunting 12 hour drive). Behind him drove his son w wife and luggage in a Jeep Liberty 3.7L v6 (no trailer). The round trip: the F150 burned half the fuel of the smaller Jeep. Of course that engine is no longer in production.

I am in love.... And heartbroken :-(. I spent the weekend poking around Kijiji and found a guy has a Nissan truck for sale near Tavistock (Woodstock). A mid 80's 4x4 Nissan truck w a 2.4 4cl 103hp and 124 ft-lb torque and new Weber dual carbs. He bought it in Arizona and did some minor upgrades (suspension, paint, etc.) $6000 http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/kit ... nFlag=true

I have bills to pay between now and Xmas, if its still for sale next year...its mine. Old School Cool!
