Good Morning!
actually doesn't sound like too bad a time BVF! at least it's DONE and finished quickly and the pain is short lived! i remember DAYS of haying and straw on the farms i worked on growing up....small family farms with one guy driving the tractor and one of us on the wagon...and one on the wagon and one in the mow. LOL. took forever! and at least it's straw-much lighter than hay! if you get bored come and have fun destroying some wood LOL. we're into the cut it up so it fits in a bin stage-whenever the bin arrives. we have the roof of the tobacco barn to deconstruct....won't take long, but i sure don't want to do that at 33C - removing roofing steel....
so many boys sandy...sigh.....
OMG i just heard them say on the radio that it's a "heat dome" coming LOL. wow. polar vortexes in the winter and heat domes in the summer? seriously?....and putting the blame on the corn crops! saying the corn in the area is putting off so much heat and moisture from transpiration that all the humidity and heat from the corn can't go anywhere and it's going to be trapped by this heat dome....seriously? they can't just say it's the "dog days of summer"? first they blame the farmers for a wet spring and not getting planted early enough causing the sun to reflect off the bare fields making it seem hotter in town (?!) and now it's our kick-butt corn? don't know about anyone out there, but my corn is anything but kicking butt....it's surviving, but all uneven and some is stunted and some is tassling, and it's anything but perfect! gotta laugh....i hope my kick butt corn makes me some serious money after paying all the inputs....
okay, onwards. more caffeine, and then find the steel toed boots and start cutting stuff up and getting it moved out of the way so we can get to the rest of it. hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning!
They'd have the horrors now but we used to build castles and tunnels in the hay bales (small, 1960s) at haying time. Used to get covered in those itchy hay mites LOL!

Ahhhh 1-5 ratio I wish I could get that, so far I'm getting 10-1 ratio males to femalesMaximus wrote:QR_BBPOST Sounds like never a dull day over there BVF.
Back to feed store today. Opened 2 bags of bedding for the ducks coop and both are moldy and obviously have gotten wet. I get sooooo annoyed with that kind of stuff. Go there, get it, get it home, haul it to the coop, open it and curse. Take back to truck and open second bag, same problem. Curse some more. Now to find the time again and go back to town, not bitch all over them will be the chore, becausehappens, but when
happens it still has the ability to annoy me.
I am still on the fence what to do with my Rock Roo. Not fertilizing eggs. But he is so good to them all. Oh, well. I'll figure it out. Eventually.
Looks like I have 1 female and 5 males for my ducklings. If I go by feathering on wings and tail feathers and stumps for legs, I've got 1:5 ratio. BOOOOO!!!
It's nice and cool right now, but that's not lasting. Hope everyone has a great day.

Good Morning!
Kenya
With my chicks I'm over 90% males now. I've had more take on ROO characteristics in the last 2 weeks. It's so frustrating.
I know someone that ordered 50 straight run and 45 males.
Another ordered 20 straight run and all males! So I try to not 'brag' about my 10% pullets lol!

Good Morning!
I wonder if there is some sort of chemical causing the chickens to turn out male.
BPA mimics and blocks the hormone responsible for turning human embryos from female to male. yup our first signs of extinction have shown up in the small native community of Aamjiwnaang , just outside Sarnia and surrounded by chemical plants. here there is something like 70% of live births are female babies born and NO ONE CARES OR ACKNOWLEDGS IT! I lived in Sarnia for 10 years and never heard a thing, one day I saw a documentary on tv all about it. how do they keep things so friggin quiet? recently there was supposed to be a massive health study and the GVMT would match dollar for dollar to secure the funds and do the research.... well the researchers couldnt raise enough money and the GVMT backed out.
from Wiki...
"The Aamjiwnaang community has expressed concern regarding its proximity to chemical plants in the area, as birth rates of their people have been documented by the American journal Environmental Health Perspectives as deviating from the normal ratio of close to 50% boys, 50% girls.[3] The ratio as found between 1999 and 2003 by the journal was roughly 33% boys, and 67% girls.[4] The First Nation is concerned that this abnormal trend is due to adverse effects of maternal and fetal exposure to the effluent and emissions of the nearby chemical plants. This is the first community in the world to have a birth rate of two girls to every boy."

Good Morning!
Morning all! well, okay, afternoon now....
The biggest thing i worry about with the ameraucanas/easter eggers is getting rid of birds too early, because males and females can look so similar for so long a time.
In chickens it's well known that females do not survive temperature swings in incubation as well as males, so if the hatch rate is down and they're mostly male then probably the females got lost in the incubation because of some temperature swing or another during the perking over 3 weeks. But then again, in reality it's only a statistical chance that hatch ratios are 50/50. with mammals it's closer to 45/55 female:male....and strange things do happen, especially to people that own/raise chickens-like me....i can have a 90% hatch rate with 75% boys. it just happens. and one year i had a 90% female hatch! it was AWESOME LOL
well, bin filling is ongoing. getting there. the leading edge of the carnage to pick up yet is now INSIDE the footprint of the first shed to come down. and we pulled that carnage over well past the foundation footprint! which means the entire driveshed is now in the bin! whoohoo! more to go this afternoon. it's clouded over a bit, so that at least will cut down on the sunburning. LOL. and the trees are moving so a little bit of wind is nice. just in for lunch, and once i'm done my BLT (yum!) i'll be headed back out. once i'm sick of bin filling (hubby is at work) i'll be weeding the garden....and once i'm sick of weeding the garden i will fill bin....we cut up a pile of the old barn so i have lots to move before needing to cut up more. i must admit that kenya's genetics question was a nice distraction this morning.
how the straw going BVF?
we are dog sitting here, and farm sitting.....and my one bouncy dog and the visiting dog decided to have a spat last night....well, okay, knock down drag out fight. and then this morning dog sitting dog went after my one cat, my hubby caught her and she growled and bared her teeth and pulled the trying to be dominant thing over him....i seriously thought he was going to get bitten. i think this is the last time we dog sit this one. she's normally an awesome dog, but she's old and getting completely unpredictable. last time we dog sat her, she snapped at both of us, we managed to get that under control again, but repeat performance.....she didn't snap, but i would not be surprised to get bitten, and i draw the line at fights being picked with my other animals. especially the cats-and especially after she's been told no about a gazillion times, and actively went out of her way to go after the cat.....gah. other people's animals! they come back in a couple of days....then she can go back to being a happy only dog in the family dog....
hope everyone has an awesome day! only a couple more sleeps before the piknik happens! you guys are going to have a great time!
