Food Unwrapped TVO - Eggs

Post by Ontario Chick » Tue Mar 01, 2016 9:20 am

Anybody watched last night?
Food Unwrapped part of series on food on TVO Monday nights at 9 PM
Last night program was on egg layers and although I did know that Marigolds (sourced from China of course) are used to color the egg yolks, the fact that Paprika is also used, was a new one on me.
I did enjoy the part when the gentleman explained that the egg yolks from the caged (or as they like to call it complete environment control) have to be colored, because if the were left natural color, nobody would want to eat them.

Sometimes I wish we had cable/satelite. Sometimes. Maybe one day I'll take a thermos of coffee and some cookies and go and sit at the library to watch all these shows I'm missing.

I knew about paprika but not about marigold. Interesting. Thanks for sharing

It was rather superficial and missed out the research showing that backyard flocks have higher nutritional values for certain things than commercial flocks. I had a hard time watching the huge facility.

No cable here, just the free channels.
I must say the barn they showed with a million hens in it just boggled the mind.
State of the art, the hens didn't look uncomfortable, the eggs untouched by human hand, Industrial design at it's best.
I guess if you are going to "manufacture" eggs, that's the way to go.
The whole program is rather superficial and fast apparently we all have very short attention span, but I have learned something new every time, and for general public info pretty helpful.
