Red Jungle Fowl
Re: Red Jungle Fowl
A few months back I posted about my newly acquired Red Jungle Fowl chicks. I thought I would share with y’all what they look like now. The rooster is not in full colour yet but he is still very striking IMO. They have an “Eclipse” colour phase like pheasants and wild ducks where they’re colours aren’t as vibrant when not in breeding season....from what I have read.

How is their temperament? I’ve read they can be a bit difficult. Congrats, he does look beautiful!

Re: Red Jungle Fowl
I had read that they were difficult with regards to being flighty and very shy too. But, mine are actually very tame. They will eat from my hand and I’ve actually had one of the hens fly up onto my back while I was working in their pen. I held her and petted her while she told me something in Chicken(no clue what she said). While I was holding her the rooster hunched down to jump at me, which I thought was going to be an attack, but he just jumped up on my arm and checked out the hen and then hopped down. Having said that, they were very shy when I got them as month-olds. I started giving them treats from my hand and holding them. They tamed down. They have also been penned since I’ve had them. I’m not sure that they would be so tame had I let them free range from a young age. They also seem to be quite tough. I got them in February and put them in a cage that I had closed most of the sides on to hold in heat from the heat lamp. It seemed plenty warm but the temps went low enough to freeze their water a foot from where they slept. It didn’t affect them at all and they were 4 weeks old at the time.

People always ask me the same about my Old English Game Bantams. Mine are all tame and most of my girls want to be held. The boys tolerate it. I’ve never seen aggression from them. Your boy looks very much like my Wheaton OEGB! Just the “full size model” lol
