Does Anyone Understand Roosters?

Post by KimChick » Thu Aug 23, 2018 4:11 pm

Or I should ask, "Does anyone speak rooster?"
Today, I found our rooster, Burt, in a nesting box. All the chickens had been let out of the enclosure, and he had gone back in. After shooing him out, he went into the other coop, into another nesting box. While in there, it looked like he was making a nest, and he was making softer noises than usual.
I can only surmise that he was calling to the new hens, letting them know that that is where they can nest. We do have some new hens.
Whadda ya think?

As I understand it, he is letting the hens know that he's found a fabulous place for them lay their eggs and brood.

It's a typical "mansplainig" i.e. showing the girls how to do something they have figured out by themselves long time ago.
Shows he is the "sensitive" type ;)

Sherman finds them "hiding spots" and encourages them to go broody.

The most attentive and patient roosters will woo a hen by finding her a good spot to lay eggs, and then impress her with his nest-building skills and chuckling love song. If she actually sits down in that spot, she is telling him that he's won her over. Some girls like the chest beating, dancing, bellowing and general machismo behaviour that seems to abound; but some girls prefer the softer, gentler, homebody types

It's funny because Frank was not the prettier rooster and I wasn't planning to keep him but Sister and several other ladies made it very obvious he was their preferred man so.....

:hijacked: Sorry but talking of odd behaviour Miss Kibbles, the Wyandotte has the hots for Eddie the turkey tom. Lays down by the paddock fence and chats at him. I've explained the problems to her and that although I'd like to be open minded I don't see this working out!
