Yep!!! Martin and a friend went out for wild leeks with the shovels this morning and i didnt go. Was feeling left out. Martin went back after talking me out of it again and came back with 2 morels so i decided thats it, i am going. Cant take the atv, but i will walk out. Its only a km round trip to the woods and back, and i do more than that on the treadmill. So we puttered out and walked around and found a huge patch where we have never seen them before! I think the dead ash is helping the morel population....bittersweet.....found one right on the edge of the field too.
Will head back out either tomorrow or tuesday...had enough to keep me busy washing and dehydrating and freezing what we found this afternoon. Didnt want to waste any. I ended up battering and frying some for dinner. Omg so good. Yes, we find them on our land. Very lucky!! The wood violets are up too, some years i make jelly out of them. Not this year though. And wild leeks. Yum. Soon wild garlic will be up too.

Where do you find them? I would like to go out in the bush and look but not too sure where to look.

So...these were all around dead ash trees where the bark was falling off. Hit by the emerald ash borer. And within 50 feet of the field edge or a clearing where the sun hit the ground. Ours are mostly on the soth and west edge of the bush so far-longest sun. Trillium habitat....they are all within 10 feet of dead trees.
Go now....i think they will be finished -at least here-by the weekend.

The only ones we used to get in Orillia were early false morels. Not many fungi here at all.

Very jealous, first time I have actually seen them here, was beside a new patio mulched by spruce chips from a spruce we had just cut down.
That makes me think they must be around here, but although we have many different mushrooms, no morels before or since.

I've only seen them around this area.....never up north and never as far east as toronto even....
had some in pasta last night, and froze a pile and dehydrated a pile more. I think they're almost finished here...we found some that had definitely spored and done the liquifying brown slump on the ground thing. we are at the end of the yellow morels, the black ones are usually first, and then the yellows, i think by this weekend they will probably be finished and on the way out....at least in the south and west facing bush. the east and north might be a bit later because of less sun, but we didn't even find little ones in those areas yet.
