Sorry if I haven't stuck this in the right place. I am always worried when I post pictures to this forum that I am taking up too much space even though I shrink them down a bunch. I post lots of pics to our farms instagram and facebook pages and love seeing other peoples pictures so was wondering if we couldn't have a thread or topic with just links to other peoples pages especially for photo sharing?

Like Al said, post away! No need to hold back or compress/crop before you post.

Ok sorry I just remember when the group relaunched there was a thread about compressing thing because it took up much space on the server and we would have to start paying for web hosting

Yes, you are 100% correct @WaupoosCowgirl! But I learned a few things since then.

When I volunteered I asked around, but no one could tell me about server load, number of page visits per day, number of sessions, server size needed or anything else that is required on my end to estimate if I rent a server that is big enough. (anyone interested in the stats? I am glad to share now that i have them!)
In early summer (6 month in) I was able to determine that the server is waaaaay big enough for our day to day load. I have removed all picture size limits (only limit remaining is 10 attachments per post, not their size). And with that going, we will have space enough until at least fall 2017 without doing anything on my end.

Then I will do:
- compress the original (large files that are the originals behind the thumbnails) -> 10 to 20% reduction. -> 4-5 month extension.
- investigate two extensions that outsource the storage of our pictures (both became available this summer)
- investigate pruning old topics and attachments (humour with the famous "Trump in paris" picture comes to mind; although that one has a new life now and is at least twice as funny as it was then).

Now to the shameless pat on my own back...I also have grown as admin. When I started I set this up with changing maybe 5 lines of code. Then I did some small modifications, but the Online show had me heavily modify my first extension (with the OK of the original author). Why is this important? Without it, I would currently only have one extension to investigate. The second one is a very difficult one, but it keeps control over the pictures. It uses a service from Amazon that allows content to be stored at and (cheap) payment is only per size used. This amazon service is currently in use already as our backup service and because of that it would be the preferred method...

Enough already, post away!
