Effin Otis!!!!...i have, correction had, three mutt leghorns i got as chicks back in June...flighty things...fast as heck and can fly quite well...and of late i cant pen them up at night as they found they really like to roost the night away in the red cedar in the open run...5 ' fence all round...well, as i was getting things organized this morning one of them decided to fly over the fence for some reason and realizing what it had done and of course being a chicken, it then proceeded to run back and forth along the pen fence wanting back in, making a lot of squawking in the process...in swoops Otis....one less chicken...what a way to start the day...hope the other two were watching...

Here the chickens can run free and the dogs leave them alone....almost. Molly (my avatar) loves to take a run at the chickens when they get too close to the back door. And one eyed Jester has become an egg delivery service, getting eggs from the coop and dropping them at the back door or in our hand. I'll get a pic one of these days. Duchess (doberman) eats anything she can get including chicken feed and scraps and an egg on a rare occasion. Baron (old doberman) ignores them all.
Next time around, I'll train a dog to do a perimeter patrol: i'll have to make fence openings to make it convenient but well worth it.

that delivery service sounds great Baron! my dog wont chase the birds unless I tell her to, and then she looks at me tilts her head and wonders if im serious. then i yell, get those birds out of the garden! and off she goes but she never tries to hurt them. being a bird dog im quite suprised how well behaved she is around them, i think she knows they are all apart of the family. she was about 8 months old when we moved into the country and really got into poultry so shes had 3 years now being around them. rabbits on the other hand are a completely different story. I couldnt figure out where the 6 or so free range bunnies were going until I found her with a pelt that she was licking clean. Bad dog! LOL.
Very glad it wasnt a favorite Tom!
