Spider Coop
So.. There are officially waaaay more giant hairy spiders than chickens in my chicken coop. Been calling it the spider coop. Also, oddly enough, suddenly in the house (have been here since May, suddenly a large spider crop in the basement/main levels). I know spiders do good deeds, however.. I'm very phobic. Especially given that these are loonie-sized. They're black and kind of .. Velvety?? Anyway, I've heard that spiders hate peppermint. If I spray down the coop with peppermint essential oil + water, is this ok for the bird's respiratory system? I figure bombing it with Raid is not cool. I would leave it be but it's a very small coop, I must go in and out for feeding/watering/cleaning. Also appreciate any other spider remedies.. Especially for the house.

raid wont hurt your birds... just lock them out while you bomb it. mint wont kill them but raid will. im not familiar with any natural insecticides although the active ingredient in raid does come from a flower.

How long should I leave them out? Do it in the AM and by bed time should be all right?

Peppermint. Wormwood. Clove. Cinnamon. All of these do wonders for repelling spiders etc.
I was afraid of opening your post for what I would see. I hate spiders!
Side note: you have a very interesting stage name. In often debate with myself how it is pronounced. Could you please spell it out how it sounds like in the dictionary and maybe let us know what's behind the name :)
Cheers!

Thanks for the tips! My handle is actually the name of a little fun game for smartphones. It's pronounced "neh-co at-sue-may", means kitty collector in Japanese. The object of the game is to attract stray cats to your backyard. Like Pokemon but more pointless. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neko_AtsumeMaximus wrote:QR_BBPOST

LOL I always wondered that myself, mine simply means I believe in myself. I play drums on my phone, great fun n I'm getting better. HAHA
Once the mist settles all should be fine. spray them directly, all corners, cracks, edges n such. they should die immediately or shortly thereafter. any little silk white balls are egg sacks that could hatch, so take a broom and sweep all the cobwebs out. I love spiders but dont like them in my house or garage, I kill them where I dont like them.

I generally leave the spiders since they help me with the flies, but they're also considerate enough to not take over my coop. Good luck with thinning the numbers!
Have to say thank you for the topic of Nemo Atsume coming up - I'm downloading it right now! I'm banned from bringing home anymore cats (which is understandable, I'm at the numbers where they just become a giant group of jerks trying to destroy everything we own), so this will be a wonderful game for me to play.

I noticed that this year as well regarding large spiders. Yesterday two people also mentioned to me about the monster spiders around this year. Last month I was bitten by one and it left a bruise on my leg, a neighbour was also bitten and it almost turned into something like that flesh eating disease. Must have something to do with all the humidity. Even in the hay fields I noticed large weeds pulled together to form a nest, I though it was probably some kind of mouse but when I went close it was large spiders. Anyone who says I ran screaming like a little girl in pigtails is a liar, it was more like a fast walk, a really fast walk.

if you want to know what spider causes a bite like that read below, if you dont want to know just avoid all spiders that make messy webs.
the monster spiders are wolf spiders, beautiful black grey n hairy, just like a tarantula but much smaller, maybe up to 3-4". I have one in a critter cage here n taking care of it, I want to see just how big it will get.
