Interesting Head Tilting Canine Fact (On the Poultry Forum)

Ever wonder why your canine friend cocks his head left, then right, then back to left when you talk to him/her?

Well turns out there are a few potential reasons why.

According to Stanley Coren, who conducted a study, dogs tilt their heads so they can see our facial features better, as their muzzle blocks out the lower half of our faces. Along with our eyes, the mouth is an important component of human emotional expression, especially for dogs who pick up on whether our teeth are exposed or not. If you put your fist in front of your nose, you can get a picture of what it’s like with muzzle-vision.

Also, there is a concept that it opens the ear canal wider so they can absorb the waves and process the sound better,

Ava is a real head turner and Drake is more of an energy reader. Drake works off of my projected energy where Ava is always looking to look at me and will sit in front of me and stare. If she wasn't a puppy it could be creepy lol.

Sanley Coren: sharp guy. I have a dog book of his and a book on sleep: Sleep Thieves. Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Exxon Valdez and many other disasters all happened on the night shift. Most fatal car accidents happen after midnight on Sunday nights (when you account for weather and alcohol). Same with daylight savings time in spring. Moral of the story...sleep.

I think that they tilt their heads while you are talking, because while the human is speaking, the dog is actually wondering if a ham and cheese sandwich or whatever was left unattended on the counter.
