Being sold mixed chicks as "pure"

Post by nekoatsume » Mon Aug 08, 2016 5:12 pm

This is my second lot of chicks, sold as day olds, that turn out to be not what they were sold as.. sigh. Is there anyway to tell what you're actually being sold? I know I can order from a hatchery like Frey's but they don't sell what I'm looking for and Performance Poultry seems to be done for the year.

I would say stick with the folks on PTO. You may need to have patience to get the chicks you want and wait but it should be worth it. have you contacted the seller? Maybe they are unaware?

Which kind of ameraucanas-there are several people on PTO with wheaten, blue wheaten, black, blue etc....its really hard to tell wheaten adults from e+ based easter eggers. Unless someone knows the breed inside out they probably dont even know.

A good point... How many breeds does the seller list for sale or as having? The more breeds, the more likely a mix: or poor examples of the breed. If they don't let you see the adult birds, get pics of them.

Sometimes despite best efforts, roosters get in where they shouldn't.......is that possible? The seller may be mortified to find out and will make good on the next hatch, I'd try contacting them and letting them know.

I've always had great experiences with people on here, they're my first choice for anything new. What did you buy that wasn't pure? That sucks!

In my case when I talked to the guy he said they all lay blue eggs and have slate legs. I said that doesn't make them Ameraucana's. They don't all have muffs either. I mentioned one day he's going to piss off the wrong person with his labelling and he should just sell them as Easter Eggers. What they are. He repeated they lay blue eggs, that makes them ameraucanas. So he's 100 years old and I just chose to leave well enough alone. But when my cockerels go to the auction they get listed as Easter Eggers. What they are.

I will say from my own experience, not everyone on PTO is picture perfect. Do your due deligience as to not be disappointed.
