Thunder Bay city council rejects backyard chickens

I'm glad that I live in the country and in an unorganized township. Do many cities allow chickens? I know there are some that do keep chickens in the city. There are some who have tried and I guess someone reports them and then they are forced to get rid of them. Citizens are concerned about the smell, disease that it will decrease the value of their properties. Council takes this all into consideration in addition to how they will enforce bylaws regarding backyard chickens. I wonder how this works for other cities.

Brockville City allows limited numbers of chickens. Hygiene standards have to be kept up (fair I think). I live outside and our idiots wanted to call them a livestock operation and wants no livestock on less than 10 acres. everyone keeps them though!

There are some locations that keeping chickens is not advisable...but those are obvious i would think...and although i personally enjoy the sound of my rooster ( thank you OC ) a rooster in every back yard on a street might become a bit much..i think in those places where the anti backyard chicken bylaws exist, it is either a totally anti agrarian attitude or taking the easy route to spare themselves dealing with all the possible variations that could pop up, some intelligent, some not so much.. I too, am glad that i live in the country...cities make me nuts... :running-chicken:

Both our properties are rural, but recently I spoke at the council meeting, in Stayner, on behalf of allowing people in town to keep 4 birds. They passed the by-law in favour of allowing it, but with a $30 licensing fee. I think it's important to allow people the option, but offer local support on care and keeping of chickens.

Yes TomK I believe they were only considering that people be able to keep a few chickens, but no roosters. Not many people would tolerate roosters for sure. Why not be able to have a few chickens, shucks they are pets too and provide food. I can't see a few chickens being any worse than some people's dogs or cats. There are places that people's dogs outside bark daily, crap all over and dig up the yards. That's why a lot of landlords say no to pets. Dogs aren't allowed out after 11pm, I believe. redninja council was discussing a licensing fee, just as they do for dogs.

What burns my butt , other than a flame so high , lol , is that when moved here over 20 yrs ago on 1.5 acres we were able to keep horses , chickens etc , etc farm animals but when the ammalcamations of twps etc the dicktaters that run it now voted overnite basically without asking all to mtg to make big changes . So far grandfathered in but next owner no way , legally . My rant . Luck

I know what you mean Ross. That happened in Thunder Bay too, as they extended their boundary or limits of the city. Some had been rural, but then changed to city. Then municipalities outside the city began to implement the same. I grew up in a small village about a 20 minute drive from the city. Heck we had all kinds of animals on 1 acre. horses, pigs, chickens, ducks and even a cow. Not any longer, only those that had animals could keep them until another owner took over. That was a long time ago. Back in the days when I don't remember any bylaws. How times have changed.

One of the things i tend to resent, and yes I could make a list, is when folks from urban areas finally fulfil their dream of a little space and peace and quiet....or so it seems....but want their idyllic find, to be just like the undesirable mess they just supposedly escaped from...complete with signs, lighting and bylaws....hell, you can't have cow

smelling now, can you?..gotta have paved roads...but where's the money coming from?...can't have a dog barking in the distance...how intolerable...that dairy farmer guy down the road can't spread his manure on the fields....the smell is unbearable...am I digressing?....probably..lol
