Thanks Killerbunny. My Red Sex Links are coming from Freys - phew! Will check out the link that you shared :)

Too funny about the Mini-Great-Danes Ontario Chick! I hadn't heard of them before.

labradors wrote:QR_BBPOST I know more about dogs than I do about chickens and am mortified about the stoopid Doodles (and the wild prices that some of these "breeders" charge for them). Why take two excellent breeds and muck them up? Is it the same with chickens? I've just ordered some Sex Link chickens and now I have learned that they are hybrids.....
Don't worry about hybrids that's just the new buzz word for cross breeding, they are not some freaks created in a lab somewhere. If you got red sex links then congratulations you bought the most efficient brown egg layer out there. Black sex-link is usually just barred rocks cross with Rhode island reds. They do it to make a stronger more efficient layer. So they are not changing any breed because they only use pure breed parents. The hybrid chicks are sold to customers and are never used for breeding.

The Labradoodles were bred for people allergic to dogs who wanted a more robust type of dog, but yes prices went nuts, it is also my understanding that you have to breed them in a certain way otherwise they will still shed hair and many people end up with a pup that they have to get rid of later, dirty trick.

Black sex linked and red sex linked birds are always going to be mixes or mutts. And commonly they are wonderful birds. Great temperments and not flighty. There are other ways if telling sex - barring is one way, breeds like isbars and rhodbars the girls are darker and boys are lighter because of the effect of the barring gene and presence of defined headspots.....

Ask 30 people and you will likely get 30 answers for which is the better or best chicken lol.
