Dust baths in winter and grit
I use construction sand from Lowes, because play sand I've found absorbs and retains much more water than construction sand. This is especially annoying in the winter when play sand freezes into big concrete-like lumps. Not useful for dustbathing.

Jaye is right. ' Back in the day' I bought play sand for the chicken pens and construction sand for horseshoe pits...and the horseshoe pits were where the birds went because even though they were outside, they drained better and didn't freeze solid.
