Yes spring is certainly in the air. Little Dude (HDs son) went to meet and greet with his new brides yesterday. They seem unimpressed but they really disliked Junior which, along with his unpredictable behaviour, led to his demise. All the females are displaying like crazy to assert dominance for first chance at HD.

morning all!

had a rooster returned to us because he was chasing the kids in the family that had him....he's fitting in just fine again. his old girls are still here and he remembers them and they remember him, so i'm actually happy to have him back! we haven't had any issues with him, in fact he's basically staying to himself, and then last night i get a text "we have coons in the yard by the coop". yep, because the rooster that was keeping them at bay isn't there anymore....so they'll need to figure out how to deal with the coons. and the coons are learning when the automatic door shuts the chickens in, so i bet in the next 2 days they trap the coon IN the coop.....we shall see!

the sun has been just glorious! i made 3 blue bird houses over the last couple of days. was hoping to get them up last night but, well, night fell, so they'll go up sometime today. and the barn cleaning can begin! i think all the ice that was hanging out is gone....finally. and the season of mud is upon us! epically lol.

swans and geese and ducks flying over in droves the last few days. headed north thinking i might sit out turkey season this year. don't really want to, but thinking i likely will anyways. need to get the one coop jacked up and the floor fixed-will likely remodel the inside of it a bit while i'm at it. and we're doing a lot of gardens this year. can't wait to start in the greenhouse-have to find my heater...haha. that might take until summer....hm. ducks are laying like crazy, and i'm letting them collect eggs now for sitting....and will start collecting chicken eggs for hatching in the next little while too. have to get some birds separated out first. our grass has little tinges of green in it now! loving the spring weather!!!!

@WLLady rooster story reminds me of a video of a small boy sneaking up on chickens with a stick, chasing them and then in turn being chased by the rooster, hard not to cheer for the rooster

yeah they sent me some video of the rooster going after the kids, to try and see if i could see a "trigger" behaviour because they really did want to keep him because of the coons etc. Their daughter was wearing dad's muck boots, 10 times too big for her and stomping around and stepping on everything (including the hens), not on purpose, but because she's 4 wearing dad's size 11s! and their son is hyper hyper and running up to the coop and diving in and grabbing the eggs (he's 6...to be expected) and the hens are diving and flying out of the coop. so. i was nice and said "i'll take the rooster back" because the kids are high energy and the hens are just getting out of the way, but the rooster is interpreting the fuss as danger....so. he's back, and happily living in with my ducks right now until i can get a pen put together for him and his girls.
and today (and the last 2-3 days) were warm enough that they were all outside eating bugs

i built 3 birdhouses, DH hung them up yesterday on the hydro poles. yesterday afternoon we had a blue bird checking them out! the starlings dont fit (YAY!) but the sparrows are also checking them out, so i'm hopeful that the bluebirds will claim one....i have another 5 or so that i'm going to make and put up in the next few days. but it was super nice to see the bluebirds back. i put out some mealworms for them too.

Lucky you to have bluebirds in your boxes! When we built them at our other place, we had tree swallows. Very sweet birds who would sit on the washing line and sing (which sounded like running water).

Our swallows havent arrived back yet... We usually have many in the barn. They come back every year too. Usually raise 2 sets of kids and then disappear till next year

Damn sparrows last year dragged the baby purple martins out of the nestbox and killed them despite best efforts.
