okay, i have changed the annoying cow....so hopefully bullets...is bullets and not a cow with lets after. so forewarned if anyone uses the bad phrase akin to bull paddies, it will not be censored....LOL

LOL Kathy! and whats so weird about firearms KB? Hahaha heck when I did my course I didnt know any of you guys n gals and had almost no one to get knowledgeable advice from. I relied on internet reviews for guns and ballistic tests for calibre especially for my coyote gun... i had a remington semiautomatic 270... a beautiful gun and although legal for coyotes I wasnt all that comfortable shooting it knowing how far that bullet could really go. so I started looking at ballistic tests for different rounds and different kinds of rounds... sp, fmj (not legal for hunting) and other types... I settled on the 223 bolt action savage with a skull camo on it, 3-9x40 scope with a 27" bipod. i chose the 223 balistic tipped rounds because when it hits the target it fragments into small pieces and dosent exit the target... a very safe round. nailed a coon at 200 yards there a year ago.... right through the neck! my proudest shot yet!

now if I had realised how hard it can be to get 223 rounds I may have picked a different calibre but I am very happy I chose it!

I sold that 270 as much as I didnt want to, to a good buddy of mine, so I can still shoot it anytime I want to which is awesome. but I wanted that Mossberg 20 guage a lot more!

Baron, you're so cheeky! I love it! The last thing Lou will ever be is a wildlife photographer. Trust me on this. I have managed to get him out maybe once a year for a walk on our property and it's only been because I have threatened otherwise. Good man, just not a natur lover.

So Al, if it goes into fragments and doesn't exit this is confusing to me. Don't you eat what you kill? How do you deal with a bunch of pellets in the animal?

Well sandy...you pick out the pieces-shotgun shells have pellets... they are easy to find and pick out.

Its about shock. If the bullet goes through the animal it knows something happened but not sure what so it runs away. Now you have to track it two kilometers.
If the bullet "mushrooms" or fragments then the shock kills the animal fast and it falls over. No tracking blood through the bush and swamps.
So you have a "hollow point" and the bullet "mushrooms" (goes from the shape of a rocket to a mushroom cap) and the energy of the bullet turns into a shock that stuns the animal. Little hole going in; big hole coming out. Test it: get .22 hollow points (my fav is Remington Yellow Jackets) and use a watermelon for a target. Then it'll make sense. For military applications the bullet will have a hard outer shell and a soft centre so its armour piercing (full metal jacket).

Head shot , heart shot ,lung shot or artery . Know your games anatomy , where the kill shots are , know your firearms pattern / shell differences & at what distances . Wind effect & flat shot , uphill & downhill shots . Then learn to overcome the adrenilin rush .

Biting down on bird shot in goose meat is not a lot of fun. Neither is digging out buckshot. I don't recommend using such unless you're starving and have bad aim
