Kathleen (turkey) always insists on 2 hatches per year. I hope she doesn't this year because she is now 7!

oh, forgot to mention, if you are going with the wire bottom crate/cage route, this should only be for a few days, not weeks. If, after a few days she's still adamant about setting, do it again for another couple of days.

Wat Jaye said. And put the cage on bricks or something to have air underneath and absolutely no litter or straw or anything for her to cuddle into. and I give them a wrist sided stick to be able to perch on. Water and food and a wire open bottom, might take a few days, but should get the job done.

I find that moving them to another hen house will help break them. I also perch them every night and make sure it's dark enpugh for them not to be able to see to get to a nesting box. I have also found, if they want to be broody, they want to be broody. Sillies are next to impossible to break. Most of mine are with their 2nd set of chicks. Good luck!

Lovely! Makes me less anxious about opening the gate between the Silkie chick broody pen and the main chicken tomorrow.

Since the mother hen hatched her 1 egg, and I put an 11 day older chick with them, they have had access to outside almost everyday for a couple of hours to eat grass and forage. And our rescue cochin would be out at the same time. Today, because it has been 4 weeks since the older chicks hatched, we put mother hen, her 2 chicks and the 17 others together in one half of the pen. They are all getting on just fine.
One barred rock hen took exception to seeing mother hen on the other side of the fence. Hence, they duked it out with the fence between them while all the other hens and rooster were outside, enjoying some fresh grass, catching bugs, etc.
I tell ya, these barred rock hens have more bullying tendencies overall compared to our BSL's, RSL's, and barnyard mixes.

This was taken when mama hen was let out of the barn with her chicks.

Now the hen and her chick(s) are outside in one half of the yard with all the other incubator-hatched chicks. They are all getting along quite well.
