I had the great pleasure of interacting with the above dog (bernese) a retired breeder from glenbern. Alli Ross used to be on PSO. Maple is/was absolutely delightful, well mannered and great around people and animals. I know it's a different breed but if Maple is anything to go by....

Bernese are beautiful dogs but short lived, I'd looked into getting one but 8 years is just too young and sad.

You should never believe these estimates, my son had one lived to 12 years of age which I feel is very respectable for a large dog, and now has another one, they have such a beautiful temperament if it wasn't for all that hair I would be sorely tempted.
Their memory in these dogs for people is pretty remarkable, I haven't seen her in 2 years and DIL brought her to the airport to meat me, and with all the people streaming out of the airport, I was about 80 feet away and said HI..and she headed straight for me, like she just saw me the day before....
Kenya, stop confusing me ;)

Brushing the hair is very relaxing and calming!

I have met one of these kinds of dogs. It was very calm but aloof.

I hope you are right, I have just spent 1/2hr following iRobot picking up small rolls of dog hair, I think "Robbie" rolls them up and spits them out, apparently feels dog hair isn't in his job description ;)

So now the puppy shopping is on hold, and after watching Downton Abbey re-runs (new to me)
I am also considering a yellow Lab, if we ever come out of this, I am just dreaming now. :)
