My chickens aren't roosting!

Post by Stellap » Sun Jul 28, 2019 4:01 pm

I don't know ... they know how to cause they use the outside roosts but at night they are all crammed in a corner on the floor. It doesn't feel like they should be doing this but I'm not a chicken. I wish now I'd got an adult with all the babies.

I should have mentioned that they are 3 months old.

Ventilation? Is it too hot / stifling in the coop at night? Were they using the roost before? If so, what may have changed?
I have a fan going 24/7 in our coop ATM, because of the heat/humidity.

I put mine on the perches every night...it gets old but I don't want them in the nesting boxes.

Are the perches too high? Maybe try giving them something lower. It could be temperature related, and it will be cooler near the floor.

Thanks everyone ... I have a fan going also 24/7. Ivwill check tonight for creepies. I think the ventilation is ok (has been in previous years) but maybe not with these temps ... I will check and remedy that. I can see me trying to put them all on perches ... tonight will be fun. Thanks again!

Thanks Ross!
I did a big clean up and re-org of the coop today.
Added more ventilation, moved the fan and lowered the roosts ... to no avail! I just spent half an hour out there with the flash light putting them on the roosts and all they do is jump off and cram themselves in that corner. I'll try again tomorrow night. By the way they roost outside during the day ... I have several set-up.

It seems that something about that roost is bothering them. Is it important to you that they roost there? Is there a reason why you would prefer they roost rather than sleep in that corner?
