For Ontario Chick

Post by windwalkingwolf » Wed May 15, 2019 12:49 pm

@Ontario Chick , you remember the light blue girl I got from you via KB? Well, do you know what your "Sensible, no-nonsense" Wyandotte is doing? She's broody, on a dozen eggs. But not in a coop, nooooo. She's in the very back of the cover-all, on top of stacked furniture and bric-a-brac. Her nest is on a door that was set on a cabinet, three feet in the air. I'm going to have to move her, obviously, but in the meantime I guess she at least has a nice view. When the back door is open, she can see my vegetable garden field and pasture. She's been stuck tight three days and nights now. No word on what she thinks will happen when babies hatch and start to explore, I guess safety considerations were secondary to the view  Pictures will follow shortly.

I was going to ask if she was still around, this is why they are called "dual purpose"
One purpose, Hatch the eggs!!!
the other purpose, let the human worry about the consequences ;)

I was mistaken, she doesn't even have a nice view...there's a bottlejack and a dirty carboy in her way

Hey, what do we know about what hens dream of when they sit there patiently, a bottle of something may be just the thing ;)

Well @windwalkingwolf , how are you going to deal with this? Are you going build a complex series of ladders and ramps for the coming little ones? Or are you going to try and move her and her eggs?

I'm going to try and move her. I'll go out one night soon, and tuck hen and eggs into a cat carrier, and bring kit and kaboodle into a dark spot in the house for a couple of days until I'm sure she's not going to protest the move and go off the eggs. She's my sixth broody so far this year, not counting Cheryl or O.J. because those little wenches quit. I thought LAST year was Year of the Broody!
I'm *trying* to leave some incubator room just in case Mama Blue goes un-broody when I move her...I'm really curious to see what's going to come out of her eggs!

If her hatch mate is any indication, she will stick.
This poor girls has been sitting for 5 weeks now and still has one more week to go.
I completely expect her to get up one day, and turf the eggs out, saying "OK you are chicks now, better get going" !!....and who could blame her
