Today-right now-my thermometer says 1c. Why does it feel so cold!!??! Just finished up chores and found another turkey egg...poor things are a tad confused as to what season it is. Horse manure is frozen to the ground so technically its winter but it looks like time to tap the maple trees! Hubby was out bunny hunting and finally our bouncy hyper dog is figuring it out....arthritic dog and i stayed home and stoked the fire lol. Lazy pair we are.
Did a batch of soap with some new molds i got and some different essential oils. Guess i should start using some of this stuff...maybe clean up a bit lol.

Hope everyone has had a nice weekend.

WLLays -Neighbours here in Cambridge were setting up sap lines today. Not sure if they were also tapping? Soon. Cold nights warmer days.
I felt colder than I thought I would today also
But with me could be because I've been inside pretty well since Nov 2!
Right now temp reads -3

I saw a flock of about 15 turkey vulture 's today, have NEVER seen them in January. Usually not until at least mid-March. Yes it may have been mild today but it was damp as heck, went right through me!!

good morning folks! well, now i know why i was so cold this weekend. blasted viruses! gah!
turkey vultures??! REALLY!?? wow. never ever ever in january! i just about toasted a skunk on the road this morning. thankfully i didn't....nice big one...the double striped kind. and VERY definitely awake.
with +2 forecasted today it'll be a good day to get the frozen stuff out from under the roosts and get some new shavings into the pens.
had a huge flock of about 70 turkeys in the field yesterday. nice to see. and i have now gotten eggs from each of my turkey pairs....means my 9 month old girls are laying now. glad i got the wire up and got them separated up with their boys. and everyone is happy and nesting. anyone have any ideas for ideal nesting material? i just threw a bunch of fine hay into the corner of each of the pens...but would rather do something they would prefer. right now they're scratching it down to bare concrete floor and then eating the leaves and stuff off the hay....hm. i also got a record number of eggs from my layers yesterday-every girl in the layer coop laid an egg. unbelievable. i've got 15 out there, and only been getting about 5 eggs a day....yay!
hope everyone has an awesome day!

My young turkey girls, mid June hatch, haven't started yet but the ones I sold to WWW have! Cheeky whotsits. Last year when the 3 older hens wanted to nest I tried hay, leaves, shavings etc but they made it clear it was unacceptable. They hatched on the bare wood nest boxes (successfully) as did the girl who hid under the white pines inside the pen and wouldn't be moved even during heavy rains. BTW I don't recommend trying to move a broody turkey jennie without body armour, make my broody chickens look sweet.

Good morning, was just getting caught up on the last few pages of the Good Morning thread, when scanned thru this one, and for a moment there thought that your latest scientific achievement was a Gold egg, from possibly a Gold hen??? :)
That should get the chicken Farmers of Ontario sit up and pay attention!
Nice and sunny here, there is something mildly disquieting, watching the Eastern seaboard under deluge of snow, and seeing grass patches on my front lawn.
Have a safe one!

So mild today! Even my old girls were social this morning. This columbian wyandotte will be 6 this april, the photo bomber was born last spring. She usually hangs out on the top of the nesting boxes where she can watch the cars go by but today she was scratching and messing around with the younger girls.

Even the horses were outside in the pasture instead of hiding out in the lean-to at the barn.

And it looks like we are going to have another 2 calves within the next 24-36 hrs!

Life is good!
