Re: Cuter than a basket of puppies
Mum is fine, but when she's done milking for Fallon, she's going in the freezer. She's not young, and this time when getting ready to kid, she turned very nasty to the other does, and nearly killed one. This go, she had Fallon and a twin brother, in a cold concrete corner she had scraped clear of straw. All seemed fine, both up an nursing, but she wouldn't tolerate bedding near them and I couldn't run a heat lamp that far. They were freezing, and I came out again after an hour to find frost burn on their little noses. I moved them to the warm pile of straw under the lamp and left for work. When I got home, Richard had this little one in the bouse... both had tried to get to Mum instead of the other way round, the buckling was dead, Fallon was weak and her ears and back toes were frozen, and apparently senile mum is looking frantically for babies 3 feet from where they actually we're, and now convinced that Fallon is NOT her baby, unless I stick her back in that corner. So we take her out twice a day to get milk the old fashioned way, and milk Ma at the same time to bottle feed. Ma will not let her suckle, nor stand to be milked, except in that one very spot. So, we have a "house kid" at least until she's healed. She will likely lose the tips of her ears and possibly hooves on at least one foot, not sure yet. But Fallon is a trooper and is running around like a pro, harrassing the dogs...who for their part, have been very tolerant and even doting :) So anyway, this is MA's final breeding.
