When candled, spots appear inside egg?
The four pictures I’ve attached are of four different eggs from four of my chickens. This morning when I was pulling my eggs out of the fridge, I thought I’d shine a flashlight through them just for fun. Two of the eggs were clear all over the inside of the shell, and two of them were covered in spots. But the spots are only on the inside. Only visible when you shine a light through them. I am new to raising my own chickens, but is this spotting on the inside of an egg “normal”?

Thats the shell itself and it usually means your hens need a little more calcium in their diet.

yep i agree, that's porous shells.....although some girls will have porous shells regardless of the amount of calcium in the diet, some will be less porous with more calcium...depends on the hen.

I have a hen that consistently lays eggs with porous shells. I didn't realize this until I started incubating and candling them. I can tell you that very few of those eggs lasted in the incubator until hatch. In fact I'm not sure any of them produced a live chick. I'm assuming they lose liquid faster than normal shells? Not sure.

Thanks for your input WLLady and Happy. I’ll keep candling the eggs as I collect them. Hopefully the calcium helps with the porous shells.
What kinds of foods would you feed your hens to boost their calcium? Would scrambled eggs and sesame seeds be good?

Firstly are you feeding them a layers ration and are you providing oyster shell free-choice?
Those are the two easiest ways of ensuring appropriate calcium.

Right now they are just getting Rolling Acres Layer feed. And a cup of Rolling Acres Scratch in the morning. But if thats not giving them enough calcium I can buy some oyster shells.
