Vernon auction tomorrow.

Post by Skinny rooster » Fri Oct 20, 2017 11:06 am

Tomorrow is the auction in Vernon for the Eastern Bird Breeders Association. This is the final auction for the surrounding Ottawa area so if you don't get your chicken fix, you will have to wait till spring! Judging from other auctions, prices have been low, this could be an advantage if you are thinking about adding new blood as there are often really really nice birds at this sale. Lol, no I'm not in this club, I am probably going to just look, at least I hope I just look. Well if snowy calls go cheap I may fall off the wagon.

Looks like a very good weather for tomorrow, I thought I missed it because Macdonalds corners used to be on the same wknd, very tempted to go, haven't been since the new management took over.
Good way to check the "temperatures" of the hobby.
Or do I really want to know? ;)

OMG. I wish I hadn't read this. I thought I had missed it too. Now I just have to go. Need more quail. Not really.

Yes Jay "really", you know that old saying, "you can never have enough quail". Ok I just made that up but we are here to encourage addiction not treat it. Actually what do you do with quail, that seems to be the "it" bird now. Maybe I need some quail. Anyway now you just have to go.

I can't speak for others, @Skinny rooster , but I am raising quail for their eggs (for health benefits for myself and hubby). At least, that's the plan. I like them. Their feed to egg conversion ratio is much better than chickens, they need less room to be happy and not quarrel, and they are pretty quiet compared to chickens. I am using the deep litter method in the run and I'm moving spent flax bedding from the quail house into the run weekly. So far, so good.
Will you be going too, Skinny rooster? (yep, hubby didn't shoot me down when I mentioned that I'd like to go)

Thank goodness our hobby is (relatively) inexpensive and we do get something back (meat n eggs) and we can sell something and get close to breaking even not like other hobbies: model trains, racing cars, keeping horses, etc.
A box of quail puts you back maybe $20 (plus a day of entertainment) whereas a day at a casino is $50-200?
Or worse a day at an auction sale and you come back with a truckload of stuff you don't need like my dad who bought 1960's furniture with no resale value. "But its good stuff"........sheesh

Ha! Ha! Love an auction, but if you get more quail be prepared to make a new pen. They squabble to the death, they can be quite vicious to a new arrival be that male or female.

Yes I should be there. What do quail eat? Laying crumbs? Now I'm interested. Lol need quail, not really. Lavender and pearl guinea hens went cheap last week, maybe I need some of those too. Must not bid, must not bid, must not bid.

Thanks for the reality check, @@kenya . No time to build another pen, so no more quail for now. I was hoping to be able to just fence off a section of the existing pen and try integrating like i have done with my chickens, but.. ..
Oh well.
@Skinny rooster , quail need a higher.protein feed, like gamebird feed, or turkey feed.
I think it's best you sit on your hands at the auction tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day for a sale. There were some really nice birds and also some really really really nice birds there lol. I didn't buy anything because OC wouldn't let me, hahaha. I was watching some really nice call ducks, they went really high so I don't feel bad for not getting them. Also there were birds from people who show, beautiful... so hard not to bid on those but I started thinking that (knock on wood) all my birds are really healthy not even a sniffle so why risk it. If I had no birds and was starting over, I think I would have come home with about $900 worth of chickens lol. Prices started out really low but kept building, good stuff went high. There were bargains as well. The club ran a good sale. I left before the end because I didn't trust myself lol.

They had pie, guys do I need to say more?
