Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Fri Mar 24, 2017 9:28 am

I will spend next week in the country puttering around to make sure i get back into the swing of driving-its been almost 4 months!!! I am looking forward to it though, getti back into the world and hopefully i can get back to full time fast....supplemental disability pay sucks, great to have, better than nothing by all means but i really am looking forward to pulling my weight again!!
And with that appointment yesterday i am very very hopeful about getting a small garden in this year!!! And i am going to ask my physio about some task specific strengthening for things like moving feed bags and the specialized work at work that i do.
Yay!!!!

You have got to be kidding me, woke up to another fresh snow cover .....
Last night I was admiring all the grass suddenly showing, I should have looked harder, this morning can't find the driveway, not even slightly amused, on my way to the dentist, an appointment cancelled first because of freezing rain the because of Snowmagedon and now I pretty much have to go, provided I can get out of the driveway.
I hope Ya'll are having a better morning then we do, have a safe one!

Good morning! I have had a busy week of non-work! It has consisted of napping, sleeping some more, a too-brief visit with TomK to steal some EE roosters, a few more naps, and a road trip yesterday to meet Dean Link and family to pick out a puppy. It was a combination road trip, with Richard picking up some wheels, and our driver wanting to look for old cars. The trip included several naps LOL. It was funny to watch the weather as we travelled west--we drove through a blizzard for an hour, then freezing rain, then rain, then by the time we got near Oshawa it was 10 degrees C. Coming back was exactly the same, in reverse. So, a trip that should have taken 9 hours with a couple of meal stops, actually took 13 plus, including visit with Dean, three meal stops, multiple side stops, and a couple hours sloooowwww drive. It was nice to get out, but the back seat of a pickup truck was not built for comfort, and it's going to take me three days to recover from the naps. I think I broke my bum lol! Anyway, successful puppy-picking-out occurred, and I travel that way again in two weeks to pick her up and drop off a muscovy drake. If anyone needs birds moved to or from Smiths Falls- Durham region, I will have a little room.

Not a big problem at all.
Congrats on the peeping in the basement, great sound to welcome spring :)
"Line breeding" is a process of breeding close related animals together to intensify certain traits (colour, body shape, laying ability, etc.)
This also intensifies negative traits and can intensify health problems. This is why many purebred dog breeds have so many health problems: agressiveness, stubborness, hips and skeletal problems etc. (and we won't mention what it does to people who marry family members. Thus the laws and ancient church rules against it.)
Its not that big a deal in poultry. I read a long time ago from a British book on breeding bantams for show that you should introduce new blood every 5 years to your flock.

Words to look up: inbreeding, linebreeding, outcrossing, hybrid vigour

Ha ha i got a sneak preview on facebook!!! Gorgeous!!!! I love the ticking!
Congrats www!!glad you made it safely too...even if you did break your bum. Hope its unbroken today.
Have to admit the back seat in my ford is pretty decent. I was pleasantly surprised with it.

Pouring like mad here but nice and warm!!
well west lorne physio never called me back so i am going to try a different place. Looks like half days at work probably if i can drive-going to try that out when it stops pouring rain. My first solo feed store run in probably 6 months!!! Omg. I popped into work yesterday with some cookies and to say hi and get a feeling for how its gojng for when i come back.....its going to be busy. Very very busy. I am looking forward to it though, give me some purpose and a reason to get out of bed. Yay!! So. Today i get to do the feed run and test my ability to drive. I can move my feet normally so i am not worried about stoping. Its the turning and both hands on the wheel thing i havent tried in 3 months. Lol. The guys at the store can load the feed and martjn can help once i get back. But for now i am going to sit like a lump and drink my caffeine. :-)

Horses got trimmed yesterday, need to move hay today (between rain storms) and feed store and then tonight i have eggs to candle from the incubator. Replace any non starters and add in another flat of turkeys if theres room. Or maybe fire up the hovabator for the turkeys i have collected. Theyre laying like crazy new. 5 eggs a day from 5 jennies.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Good morning! Its a cold cold rainy day here today!!

I think I'm done incubating. Got 14 chicks I think... and 5 turkeys. One didn't hatch... but had the Brinsea filled, and so 6 made it to Lockdown. The rest were clear. The first little turkey out has a bum leg. Thinking it was slippery on the hovabator grate... or maybe its just like that. I cut a band-aid in half... and taped its legs. After it learned not to fall on its face/back.. its standing perfect!! Only once I saw its hock kind of lean out abit.. hopefully it comes. Right perky little thing!

I know your not really supposed to.. but I helped 3 chicks out of the eggs, and have perfectly healthy chicks!! The one I helped was 'dead' when I peeled it out. Not breathing... not moving... but then I 'thought' I saw a wing hair move. I wrapped it in paper towel, and massaged it, and pumped its chest, and held its head straight out thru my forefinger/thumb.. and it peeped. I had my hand wrapped right around it, and could feel no heartbeat. It seemed dead again. For about 4 minutes, and more encouraging peeps every once in awhile, made me continue. I could feel the occassional heart beat. Low and behold, when it finally opened its mouth, and peeped continuously, and I could feel the steady heartbeat, I lay it back in the bator. The other jerks started picking on it, so I took them to the barn. It just lay there, and peeped occassionally, laying with its head to the side like they do when they are resting/sleeping. Today its perfect!! Lonely in the bator. Nothing else hatched. 3 eggs, and one turkey. So.. I will take it out later.

I also helped another chick, and I gave up on it for dead, it had the bulbous belly.. but NOT open navel.. well, maybe a tad... couldn't stay upright, because of the belly... and so I put it up with the turkeys with the small brinsea heater. This morning, I went in to take it out, thinking it would have been dead. I had the 5 turkeys up there, and one chick to teach the turkeys... and I could seriously NOT TELL which chick was the 'goner'!!

So, I will continue to help them out.. cause you just never know. If they are going to die in the shell... they will either live with a chance.. or die like they would have anyhow. Those were chicks that shrinkwrapped for some reason or other, even tho I was VERY good about not opening the bator lots, until the end.

These chicks are mutts... with EO dad. So cute and yellow. Out of EE hens.. and other mutts. OC.. enjoy the snow, LOL. It should quit someday, lol.

My nephew's wife just came with her daughter, and I showed her the babies, the running bator... some tips... and she brought the Little Giant over that she got from Christmas. Shes 11. Shes so excited. I sent her home with 22 hatching eggs of the same.. only now they are running with the Ameracauna... and so they are going to order a turner when they get home. Seems the ones from BerryHill don't fit inside them. Our local feed store only sells the hovabator and turner... and TSC where she GOT the little Giant, doesn't seem to have any either. She will have to research them out. I just made her year!! So happy about that. I told her she could end up with blue/green/brown egg layers.

Well... I've rattled on here enough. Good luck Kathy... and stay safe on the roads!! Crappy out.

The turners from Berry Hill only fit Hovabators. I managed to make one fit by carving the Styrofoam and it's OK, sold the other.
