Question Stubborn Canine Yeast. WLLady? Anyone?

Ava has a yeast infection in her ears. My bad as I didn't dry them after swimming. Actually I have never dried a GSD's ears because they are up and open, drakes I do because they are flappy and down. Not a big deal, I can dry Ava's ears from now on. If we ever get this under control.

Vet remedy; clean her ears twice a day with dry gauze. Use prescription Otomax x2 a day.

So I clean her ears at least twice a day with the theory of better out than in. What you clean out is greasy blackish gunk. Every time. It's definitely better than almost 2 weeks ago, but at this point we should be much further along. The dry gauze seems to make her ears a bit irritated so last night I used ACV while cleaning. There wasn't such a resistance and I think the coolness felt good. She also gets 2 probiotics a day during all of this.

So Wednesday is 2 weeks. Her prescription will be done. Her yeast infection is not under control. So, I'm this close to buying either monistat or the one for athletes foot. Forget what it is called, but it's anitfungal.

If the prescription isn't doing its job after two weeks, I'm willing to explore other options. I'm going to continue to use ACV to clean her ears because again this morning she didn't fight me so bad on it, so there is clearly some benefit to that.

First things first-are you sure its yeast? Otomax or epiotic is usually super at cleaning it up. If you wipe a pile out and sniff it-does it smell like yeast? High slighly sweet and tangy? If not its is probably not yeast and something else has got in that the otomax doesnt treat. Ear wax will go black when dried out. I would be careful with vinegar for too long since its really acidic and can burn the skin inside and then you will get oozing and tons of wax....
You vet should be able to take a sample and put it under the scope and see what it i. If otomax isnt doing it i would be fungal but your vet can tell you for sure

She did scope it. Came back and said yeast 100%

Ok, maybe I'll use witch hazel in her ears. I was out but picked up a bottle yesterday. I just know dry wasn't helping her along.

Not a vet, but I do for me and the dogs about once a month. A capful of rubbing alcohol in each ear. Especially if I have been swimming. The alcohol has the action of drawing h2o out of things, so most funguses, yeasts, bacteria die from the drying action. The alcohol itself does not do the poisoning, its changing the environment where some of the gucky stuff lives. Works for me anyway.

I've had German shepherds for years and I too thought the straight up ears I didn't have to worry about ear infections, but I ended up with 2 unrelated and not at the same time, girls with it. Very hard to get rid of, the yeast treatment didn't work, finally they gave me something just to help the ear dry out and I'm sorry I forget the name but it was something like Dry ear and it worked like a charm. When ever they started to hold one ear crooked I would put some in the ear and massage it in. I cleaned the ear first, but usually only a couple treatments did the trick and it would be gone. Oh they would get it again usually after the ear got wet but easy to get rid of. I got it at the vets but it wasn't a prescription medication. Hope this helps.

Thanks Kenya. A friend of mine I was just on the phone with said the same thing, not a prescription but dries the ear out. I wonder if it's the stuff Kathy was talking about too. Anyways, back to the vet tomorrow, because this isn't working. I'd say 50, maybe 60% better. After almost 2 weeks we should of made much more progress here.

the only reason i'm thinking it might be something else now is that you've treated for yeast for 2 weeks, and maybe something else is in there now.....yeast is usually not that hard to get rid of. especially treated twice a day....

In all my adult years of owning dogs I have never ever had yeast infection in the ears. This one is very interesting. Back to the vet tomorrow if they can take her or Tuesday. I have a scope. Wish I knew what I was looking for lol.

My female German Shepherd had a yeast infection in one ear back in October 2015. The vet prescribed Canaural ear drops ($27.92 + taxes). I treated both ears. She quit scratching her ear and shaking her head about the third day of treatment, and the swelling went down soon after. Treatment was for 10 days. If she's scratching the ear flap a lot, spread on a thin layer of zinc ointment. It will remove inflammation.

Muppet got almond oil massaged into his ears by our vet and down the canal then drained out . Worked well.
