Does anyone know what kind of owl this is?

Yup..Barred Owl..chk out Peterson's Field Guide...awesome book...best there is...we have a fair amount of owls here...more so than hawks..Barred, Grey, Great Horned and Screech mainly...incredible birds..but then again, aren't we all in love with birds? :running-chicken:

Thanks everyone, for all your input. I agree with the general consensus that it was a barred owl. I hope that, as WWW suggested, he was just listening for mice or other rodents.
