@Maximus how old is Drake?
My lab is around 7 we think but he's starting to experience some mobility issues :(
My vet was always amazed with his condition since labs have a tendency to pack weight on but our last visit was a shocker. I knew he put weight on but he's gained 12 pounds in a year! Not obese but certainly carrying too much weight. His diet hasn't changed but his activity level certainly has. He wants to run...but he pays for it that night. We have started him on glucosomine but so far no change.
Vet x-rayed his hips and said they look great. He has had tpo surgery to repair his ACL in one knee. I'm afraid his other knee may be going now. I hate seeing the sad look in his eyes when he hurts. Think we are heading for a second surgery soon.

Drake is just over 8 years old. They get stiff for sure after 6/7 yrs old.

It is sad when they get older and start to feel the years. It is OK though...remember that, it is all part of aging. Life's activities (including food consumption) should be adjusted accordingly.
Simple things too. I don't command drake to sit anymore. He knows his manners and what matters is if I need him to sit he will and that's good enough for me.

I have a long fast paced walk with Ava that drains her obnoxious energy. Drake stays home for that.
Then I have a walk with drake and Ava where we walk at drakes pace (and Ava runs around like a lunatic) and he lets me know when he wants to go home. Drakes walk is still a good 45/60 minute walk each day, it's just on his terms. So around the same spot of returning, we just turn around and head home. It is important to have exercise every day to keep things moving, but impact isn't exercise. I have a ramp for both of them to use when getting in and out of crates in the back of the truck. No jumping for either of them.

I can not stress enough the amazing properties of Sasha's blend.

Admittedly it's not Drakes favourite but I mix in his raw organs and a raw eggs and he doesn't even notice.

Another thing to consider is the food being consumed. Wheat, soy, preservatives are all inflammation inducers. Raw chicken provides a lot of glucosamine and so many beneficial nutrients that are decreased or slaughtered in the kibble process.

Cinder blew both her ACL's. when she had just one blown she wore a custom orthodic brace. Expensive but what a difference. For her she also got a heating blanket under a blanket on her bed and an ice pack on the other end that I refreshed throughout the day. She figured out which one she wanted and would sit on them accordingly. (Usually the heating pad). But the option was hers. She also had Sasha blend.

Ava also gets Sasha's blend for her rapidly growing joints!

I don't know if you want all that info and my opinions/experiences, but there it is haha!

Drake is a golden retriever (shaved for the summers so his fur is still growing back in).

Just keep on loving, sounds to me like you're doing great and your lab has a fantastic home!

Thanks for the info! I will look for Sasha blend for him. I have tried the heat/ice pack and he wants none of it lol. Picky boy. He will opt to lay on the wood floor rather than deal with that. He was just out helping me lug wood for the stove. He carries one piece for every 8 of mine but he's so proud doing it! His treats have been replaced with carrots as his reward but he doesn't seem to mind.
He's such a good-natured boy...Drake looks very much the same. And I did know he was a Golden -they are just so similar to labs in their aging issues I thought I'd ask.

Awwww I love labs and their carrying items. That so sweet!!! I can just see him, tail high, prancing like he's almost doing a fancy gallop.

Every time I come in the front door, 5 minutes later or 5 hours, I get a stinky dirty sock from the laundry. It's very confusing when the laundry is all done. Haha!

Sashas blend you can get at your vet (most vets) or you can order from vet products out of Australia (soooooo much cheaper) and you can find online @ Amazon.ca

Just thought I'd share this info too.

AppleTree orthotics in Burlington does braces for canines. They mold and build it custom from a cast. It was a life changer for Cinder.
I'm sure a brace could help support the other ACL and maybe even prevent it from rupturing or prolonging the rupture. They have follow up visits And a life time of adjustments. They dedicate one day a week of their practice to canines. Amazing ladies! So helpful and understanding. If I was ever in the need to get another I wouldn't even consider a Google search, they are where I would be.
Cinders customized orthotic brace was $1000.00
You can also pick a design for them (free of charge). I'm a superhero geek so her brace had the Super Girl logo! Because...you bet, she was my super girl!

Here she is with her brace on.

 she's getting big. She has a very very playful personality and is such a sweetie.
Last week she chased off a pack of (3) coyotes that thought they would venture onto the property. She stood her ground and they went in a different direction. I was pretty impressed for such a playful girl.

Mine is very playful too but gets really serious when defending what's hers.
Did she try to run after them?

She went to the edge of grass/bush area but I called her back. 3 against 1 isn't a game I want her involved in.
