Keeping quail
Well I have just turned an incubator on! if it stables out tonight im setting 25 JMF Jumbos. now these eggs are old and have been in the fridge so its quite an experiment for some reason I kept putting off... the last group of eggs i gave to another member didnt hatch at all :-( so I dont have very high hopes, I dont think they are fertilized or my keeping eggs in the fridge for an extended period of time dosent work very well. BUT I also sent another group of eggs 2 months ago out east and that person had a 90% hatch rate so who knows...
keep ya posted!
keep ya posted!

Thanks Kenya, I should know in a week or so if they are good or not.

I raise cots as well. They are great little productive birds. They taste good too! Lots of colours to choose from and they are hardy. I will try to get some pictures of my pens and the birds over the next few days on here.

That sucks about the fertility issue, Al. Likely just the season, eh? You've bred these specific birds before?
As promised, here is one of my grow out/breeding pens. This is the small one. Measures 8' x 3'. It has 1/2" x 1/2" wire on the floor. The enclosed end has cardboard on the floor with a good layer of shavings to allow the birds to get off the wire and provides a spot for them to lay their eggs. They can get out of the elements as well. I used to have 1" x 1" welded wire on the sides but a short-tailed weasel slipped through and devastated my flock once. Now it is covered in 1/2 x 1/2. The roof height is low to prevent head and neck injury if the quail flush.
I built a new pen for my black east indies but...... Now it's used for more quail. It measures 12' x 4'. It has the 1" x 1/2" wire floor. The floor is better in the winter as it allows the to fall through easier. Same general design though. Enjoy. Chris.

Very nice setup, mine are in the garage, I don't have that many just 4.
One laid a pale blue egg today, I love the taste of the eggs better than chicken eggs. It could be what I feed them so I'll have to try feeding the same feed to some of the chicken's and see if their eggs taste the same. Anyone tried that?
