I love it when the neighbours complain about the farm. Most have a brain, some do not. Like.... tough... don't hang your laundry when we are spreading manure. And, its ON our property, when the crap is flung 2 inches from our fence line and ours. (I especially LOVE when they throw their waste on our side of the property line.... and then Gary goes out with the loader occassionally, and shoves the crap back onto their property. Oh the words that fly!!!!!!!
Then, there are those that have a garden. They think after the corn is planted, or whatever, that its safe to go ahead and put a few tomatoes and other veggies at the edge of the field... or tear a few plants of crop out, to have a garden. Then we come along with the sprayer, and kill everything. One neighbour tried planting seeds in a couple rows she dug corn out of.... and her seeds never came up. Dam's told us she came back and complained about her seeds... and well.... he figured out what had happened when I told him that people do this every year in our field... and if its sprayed with a pre-emerg... nothing will come up. Or it sprouts and dies.
One guy bought a lot that backed up against our farm. We had a permit to put in a manure lagoon (done deal, but construction hadn't taken place yet...), and he tried so hard to shut us down when he found out. Clearly he did NOT do his homework before purchasing the lot.. or beginning to build. It was a very smelly pig farm we had at that time. He didn't win of course, but it didn't make for good neighbours. He thought he had the right to tell us what to do. Trouble is... in front of our land is houses, one after the other (village). And beside us, on the other road... same. Zoned agriculture right to that road to the east of us. AT the road and beyond, no.
Someone in the village doesn't like the hear the cows bawling at weaning. We keep the calves inside for a while, and shut the cows IN the barnyard so they aren't out in the field. But, no matter what you do, they are still able to go outside, and being so close to 'town', they get heard. Put in ear plugs, and don't go outside then. I have NO sympathies.
There was an article about the same thing I read somewhere like this... where someone bought property in Waterdown beside the train crossing, and then tried to shut the train up as it crossed the road. Honestly.. people are dumb.
I do feel bad for those that have an acre or so... and want to have chickens.. or even less, and try to have a few birds. I guess I feel luckier that I can have all that, and not worry about ruffled feathers from the road.

Zoning and neighbors
I feel sorry for the family on Kijiji. It appears that the animals are very much part of the family and well cared for. So sad!
