Frozen veggies for chickens

Post by Robbie » Wed Dec 30, 2015 8:40 pm

Has anybody tried giving (thawed) frozen peas, corn, carrots, green beans to their chickens for winter greens? Did they like them?

I give the turkeys a treat of thawed frozen peas and yoghurt...they love it! Works well to give them small pills, you just pop it inside and they gobble it up!

OK great! I'll buy some for my chickens today. I want to give them high moisture treats in winter.

I cleaned out my freezer other day, and found all those buried half empty bags of frozen veggies that have *ahem* a "touch" of freezer burn. Guess where they all went? ;-)

In our area there is a feed store that I went to this summer and bought peas for $18 a 50 lb. bag. I would soak them or maybe boil them and give out for treats. They also love boiled barley.

GW that's a great idea too! I'll see if our feed store carries these. I know they eat them dry so hopefully they will love them cooked up. I may try a bag of human dry peas at the bulk store first, to see how they like it.

My guys love thawed peas, thawed spinach and thawed strawberries and blueberries. They won't touch fresh spinach but give them the sloppy thawed wet spinach and they're all over it. I can't put thawed peaches out anymore because it's a feeding frenzy and as Russell Peters father says "Sumbodys gunna get hurt"

How long does one boil barley? Sounds like a good back up if I don't have any sprouting.
