I can't see myself ever intentionally dubbing a bird, but I'll admit that my BCM rooster got terrible frostbite last winter and now has a much different comb. I prefer to raise animals that need no alteration - I'm too lazy to add anything else to the To Do List.

I think you can show them undubbed. Not positive though, but I think I did see some at a show undubbed.

Cut off his what???
When I was first looking for a breed to seriously get into, I fancied the modern games, but the dubbing kind of turned me off. I had already decided on a breed, but I was like a kid in a candy store, looking at everything out there (I still am like a kid in a candy store every time a new hatchery catalogue comes out lol) and I came across O'Shamos, a large fowl extra-tall game that piqued my interest. They have a pea comb and small wattles. It wouldn't hurt my feelings any if breeders bred OEG and moderns in that direction, but I can't help but think they must have their own reasons to perpetuate the practice of dubbing. I understand that it's probably a good idea to dub if you have no choice but to house cocks together, as they tend to rip each other up, but I'm sure there must be other reasons as well???

Difference between BBR and wheaten in the males is really inly visible in the chick down. One is wheaten based other i think is e+. Adults look almost identical-males. Females look totally different. It is the same problem with common easter eggers vs wheaten ameraucanas. Almost impossible to tell adult males apart. Hens no problem. Chicks no problem.
I could never dub. I have a hard enough time trimming spurs....

Thanks Jeff, you would know better than many of us. I don't think I could do dubbing. Is it because they used to be a fighting breed? Is that why it was started? So when we see an OEG at a sale or show and he has no comb, it's because he's been dubbed? So the hens are never touched from my understanding?

only the males are dubbed, dubbing was started during the days of cockfighting removing the comb, wattles and lobes gives less area to be sliced open which results in less blood loss that could weaken the bird also less chance of blood getting in the eyes impairing there vision when OEG were brought into the show room the tradition was carried over into the standard

Sherman and Weezie are so cute! I have an EO rooster that has had his comb dubbed twice by frost. He had a nice comb before that. Does a dubbed comb make a rooster less attractive to hens? :)

@Shnookie I wondered that too. Always thought it was part of their "chicken sex appeal" lol
