wagler barns was it Ross! whoohoo! even found their website....thanks! yep, i'm going to give him a shout and see. what i want is for GIANTS. lol. just a 18 wide but needs to be about 12 tall at the front (maybe 14...have to measure), that i can pull about 20 feet north of the doors to the barn to double as a run in and a windbreak since the barn stays open in the winter. They have a 5 foot wide door with a slider to come through, and the wind just rips through in the winter because it's on the north, but it was the best we could do with the layout. If i get one of these things (or build, whatever) then i can pull it over to block the wind and have extra shelter for the horses out there too. :-) the photos are really nice, good thing we tore down those old shed/barn, otherwise i'd have to upgrade them because the horse shelter is nicer than the house! LOL

im pretty sure one of the coops at the old place was built by them. I had the use of this one, exact same layout, different color. it was built extremely well. I couldnt believe someone would put pheasants in it LOL. it was there when we got there attached to a 10×30 covered run.

Good Morning all!
OK, so, now that I've finally sort of got my wits about me:
thank you to all who came out for the first annual PTO Piknik. Good food was had (btw, KB, if I didn't say it already, that hamburger was AMAZING) in abundance, eggs and jam were exchanged, the show (and my hamburger) was stolen by horny turkeys and lovely tow-headed children, and I believe a good time was had by all. I forgot to pass out WLLady's lovely soaps, but if you all can PM me your mailing address, I will send you some!
My dog getting run down in the ditch by a drunken idiot early the next day, threw me for a small loop, but I'm not in jail, so that must be ending as well as it can :/. I gave it to the (most unhelpful) police, sat on my hands, learned all I could, and I waited until I calmed down a bit. All good, but my memory for that sort of thing is long. Just have to keep reminding myself that he didn't kill a person driving this road or any other. Didn't kill my kid, who regularly drives these roads on a saturday night. But next time he might, and he'll get what's coming to him. But anyway.
My garden is doing ASTOUNDINGLY well, considering I only planted in June...who knew swiss chard could get waist high??!! Second crop of snap peas and fava beans is already starting to flower...sweet corn is mostly ready and we had some for supper tonight, YUM! I have cylindra beets as big around as laurentian rutabaga, pickled some yesterday and they're not woody at all, tender and sweet...pie pumpkins are already mostly orange, tomatoes are tomatoing, zucchini are doing what zucchini DO, in spades (metric f**k-tonne is the official measurement), green cabbage, cucumbers, cantaloupe, even watermelon are doing stupidly well. Only holdout are the red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and peppers, but they're starting to do their thing too. My tomatoes are all still green, but there's loads of them and they're enormous.
Lettuce and spinach are done (OMG the SIZE of the heads of lettuce!) and I have to put a second crop in tomorrow and hope frost holds off until October.
All in all very happy with how well my garden has done this year, especially compared to my previous property where NOTHING would grow unless planted in raw chicken poop. I'm over the moon.

I'm missing two of my favourite hens, Googles Junior and Squawk both went missing three days ago, and not seen since. I'm hopeful they're hiding a nest somewhere, but I doubt it as I'm pretty sure neither were laying. And, there's been fox sign. So I've gathered up the majority of my loose chickens, especially the little guys and bantams, and they are cooped for the next few days until I catch what did it, or find the missing girls.
They aren't too happy about it, but they're getting loads of garden scraps in compensation lol.

Tractor broke the clutch, and it's so dry the cows are getting hay, so we've been moving the round bales with the 3-wheeler and a sledge. Works great, but a bit of a hair-raising experience for whoever is riding on the sledge trying to stabilize the bale :D Tractor parts arriving on Tuesday.
Grass is all crunchy again, ditches and streams are dry. I'm hesitant to wish for more rain though, because once it comes, we'll get too much, as always happens lol, so I won't complain and take what I get when I get it.

It was 40 with the humidex today, so it's finally starting to get warm/humid enough that I get logy. Can't stand up too quickly unless I want to dislocate my nose bouncing it off the ground. Again. SO, load up on water and electrolytes before I go out, and hold my water as long as possible once I get out there, helps loads. A woman I know from the Phillipines is whining about how hot and humid it is here. WHAAA. At least we don't have to live in squat concrete houses and deal with monsoons. It's Canada, it doesn't last long enough to get knickers in a twist about. Not so long ago I worked full time welding and roughing around heavy stuff at a place where we didn't get breaks unless the ambient temp hit 103 F. So I'm not complaining yet!
I've gotta get at weeding the garden tomorrow, the weeds have kept pace with the vegetables. It's a little overgrown.
I'm hatching again now that humidity has (believe it or not) gone down a little bit, and all are hatching well, except for RSL eggs. They are not losing enough water, and while fat swollen, fluffy chicks are hatching, they tend to shove their head down and drown/suffocate. Out of 8 (xEE) RSL eggs, I have two chicks, and one ripped up it's beak and hurt it's neck while hatching it's big swollen head and a*s. I was actually about to cull it for wry neck at 2 days old, when it showed me it could stand up a bit. His feet are still swollen a bit but he's now acting/looking like a normal chick instead of twisting his head and falling over to flail about. The other one hatched good but has swollen feet still as well. I run my incubator totally dry, but that's not enough for some chicks I guess. I have enough coloured and brown egg layers hatched for next year anyway, I think. I have one little bantam project hen sitting on her white eggs, and that should give me some white-ish layers for next year.
I have 3 broodies still sitting eggs, not including TWO bsw turkey hens that are permanent broodies I think, and Lacy the mixed breed turkey has started another nest under a pile of rubbish wood. She's a great layer, great broody, but a crap mom, so I won't be letting her hatch those. In any case, she's been throwing herself at Mr. Fizzlebeef the RP tom, whos' 'beef' fizzled a couple years ago, so most if not all of her eggs are duds. I really should eat that guy.
Muscovies, despite my best efforts at finding nests and thwarting their sitting on them, have about 40 kids trailing after them, including my first ever chocolate barred :D. And old Lily the Lilac is sitting her second nest. But, that's enough now! I have enough to do and freezer in fall!
Anyway, I'd say "stay cool" but that's silly. You're better off staying hot so that a little odd cool breeze feels good. Avoid air conditioning, it will only make you feel that much worse out in the real world.

Glad to hear your coming back into your self WWW, I'm not sure how long it would take me to calm down after something like that. Probably never. It would consume me... and it would not be good. Especially if I had an inkling of whom it may be. I have NO tolerance for drinking and driving.

Another hot one coming up... and the 70% chances of rain have dropped to 40%. So.. our best shot of rain for another long stretch seems to be a pipe dream. Sigh. Getting REAL fed up with that.

Taking my time getting out this morning. I really should. Tired today. Did nothing yesterday really. Picked and cut and blanched beans... I can bring them up from the cookie sheets and use the sucker thing a friend brought me. Mine (old one she gave me), well, it doesn't suck anymore.

Earlier yesterday, I was out doing garden stuff... came in around 11am.. and stayed in basically. Went out periodically to refresh the bird baths.. for the birds and the bees. That thing is DONE when the flock of starlings are finished bathing. And, they muck it up so much. Don't care for those slobs.

Someone is coming this morning to give me an estimate on painting the bathroom. Dave painted it a long time ago, but used the humid paint, but somehow, or something was done/went wrong, and its all flaked. Been like that forever. I don't have the time or patience to do it. I hate stuff like that. This gal lives right down the road, can almost see her house. So, we will see what happens there.

Also today, a nephew who does heating/cooling is coming to rip out the furnace from the blue house where son Dave lives with his family, and putting in a small propane one. So... need to call for a tank (forgot yesterday), electrician needs to come... and putting in an AC unit. Probably looking at somewhere around $3500. Ugh. Can't really afford that, but its so so hot in that house. It was so bad last night sitting there, waiting for a NORWEX party to happen, when I said to Jess.... we are having this party outside. With 10 women in this house, in this little room, we will DIE. So we did, I got all the chairs I could find, and it was good!

They are going to Marineland today. Dave, Jess, and Sawyer. You sure won't see ME going anywhere in this heat. I imagine it will be a short trip. Poor Dave. He really doesn't want to go... but shes insistent.. so family day it is. lol.

I'd better quit rambling and get out to the barn. I'm going to do bookwork later... maybe. Another inside job, lol.

Morning everyone.

Everything, and I mean everything is damp today. Heavy moisture over night I'm assuming from the humidity. Even pet the cats this morning and they're wet.

Coyote showed up yesterday. Rooster was going nuts and had everyone in lock down so I went out and saw the yotes butt and tail just in time as it entered the bush. Loaded up shot gun and sat on deck for a few hours. Holy moly it was HOT. Yote has not returned. Yet. By my numbers at coop lock down nothing got taken.

Lost a pullet to this heat again. The youngest ones I have, don't seem to be phased by the heat and humidity. The older rocks are doing great through this heat, the ducks are invincible of course, but these adolescent Easter Eggers are the ones struggling the most. Is it the breed, the genetics, or the age? I don't know, but I'm questioning their ability to survive the winter if it's a good cold one.

Busy day on the road today. Heading to get some X-rays locally, then home to pick up miss Ava and let Drake sleep his day away. He's earned a lazy day. Then off to pick up some supers for the hives and the butcher. A lot of driving out to Townsend and simcoe. Then if time allows off to Carluke to the organic farm.

So I think I jumped the gun and don't have any Easter egger Roos left. I thought these 2 I left myself with were definitely Roos. Now I'm not so sure. I'll have to take a picture at coop lock up and get some opinions. And my barred Rock Roo doesn't fertilize eggs. Yup, leave it to me to make a mess of sexing.

Silkie mom is looking like she wants to sit. AGAIN. I'm dumping her out of the nesting box each day when I find her in there. It's toooooo hot and no. Maybe in the fall when it cools down and she's up for the challenge, but for now it's just to darn hot.

For throw back Thursday or way back Wednesday (I dunno, it's a thing on social media) my daughter posted this pic of her and Josh. We knew at a very young age Josh would be into engines/motors because his favourite toy was the central vac. Yup. Go figure. So of course Mel and her friends had to torment him on social media!! All in good fun tho.

Have a great day y'all!!!

Post by WLLady » Thu Aug 11, 2016 8:47 am

morning everyone!

HOLY CRAP FOG!!!!! wow. couldn't see a hand in front of my face until about 10 minutes ago. geez. i'm sure it will burn off and then be a sauna for the rest of the day. stayed up a bit last night and watched some of the shooting stars. Pretty nice, saw at least 8 in an hour...more than usual. the perseid showers are supposed to peak tonight so if it's clear out i'll be out there! Something to be said to falling asleep under the stars....

still broken today. i think the humidity and heat really doesn't help. hopefully the weather will break tomorrow and get cooler.

sandy, it's possible that your easter eggers are spending too much time running around establishing pecking order and getting overheated-especially if they are young and stupid. but honestly, unless the air is completely dead and not moving at all you shouldn't be losing them outside in this weather....i can see if they are in a coop that has no air movement and the sun bakes it, you could always spray them down with the garden hose, mist them, if they are showing signs of heat. otherwise chances are the line might have an inherent heart weakness or something. If you want a barred rock boy that will fertilize your girls, let me know, i have 3 growing out right now that will be looking for homes. they're only 12 weeks old right now - squeaky voices right now...but this line has had good fertility.....at least for me. Too bad yote didn't hang around to learn his lesson....very glad you didn't lose anyone!

alright. another 2 grants on the go, fun fun. lots of computer work. very happy to have a desk job in this weather, and then be able to work outside in the cooler evenings. more tomatoes to go into sauce, thank goodness the beans are DONE. LOL. no more of those, i could probably pull the plants now...they quit flowering in the last heat, and now they're just looking sort of miserable. I am going to have pumpkins like mad this year. and butternuts, and acorn squash! and i think some spaghetti squash too. yum. sweet corn is being eaten just about every dinner right now, tomatoes too. okay, what is with my cherry tomatoes? they're the size of normal field tomatoes! and my field tomatoes are about 1/2 size again of normal! they're going crazy this year. need to check on my potatoes (almost ready to harvest) and get more lettuce planted and more peas....the heat really nuked the last batch. they sprouted in 48 hours, grew, flowered, made peas and quit. LOL. so i'll plant more of those too. and if i pull the bean plants i can put some lettuce and peas in there. i'm also going to build a raised frame for herbs so i can contain the mint and oregano....

onwards! hope everyone stays cool, drink lots, stay hydrated, and have a great day!
