Good Morning!

Post by Maximus » Fri Jul 08, 2016 8:14 am

Oh nooooo!!! That's not good. H5. Unfortunately I'm sure it won't be the last.

It's raining. Everything is drenched. Gardens are extra drenched. I emptied the whole container into the gardens and a few mulberry trees last night. 800 litres. Sssshhhhh don't tell anyone.

I was going to hit the auction this morning. Just because I like it there. Be decided to stay home and get some much needed things done.
Yesterday we had a celebratory dinner for Josh. He's wanted to do masonry work for a long time. Most won't give him an opportity because he is only 16 but they just don't understand this boys skill set coupled with determination ..he's an asset to anyone. He talked to our bricklayer a few weeks ago and he knows Joshs work ethics, he sees it often. When Josh mentioned it, Ken the bricklayer, was all over it and said you bet. So yesterday Josh had his first day of laying stone. Lou told me had the spreader thingy moving like a pro. I forget the correct terminology. And Josh came home smiling ear to ear. I'm so proud of him!!! So proud. This boy is going anywhere he chooses!! (I suspect it won't be masonry, I'm going to put my chips on a Deisel mechanic in our family in the near future)
Cesar Salad & BBQ Pizza for dinner.

I hope to get to the lavender festival in NOTL tomorrow. As long as it isn't stupid hot I'll get there. If it's sticky hot and people touch me .. Well I'm better off at home. I can bitch switch it in an instant in crowds with massive humidity.

We go to windmill point park every year to go swimming. Old quarry that has spring under it, so they opened it up and filled the quarry. Crystal clear, cold water and very unique in the fact that you can jump off the side and its deep instantly. Empty quarry right, so no 'shore' to speak of. My nieces come and spend time with me every few summers and I take them there. Yesterday a 22 year old male drowned and it took almost 3 hours to find him with divers, boats, fire and rescue. Sad. Such a loss for a family and loved ones. I'll be there this year agin with my nieces and sister when they arrive. If you're in that area (Ridgeway) and haven't been it's really a great day and I recommend it. You can go to the other side and jump off the rocks on varying levels into the water. That's what we do. Cause I'm a cool aunt that way!

Well, hope everyone has a great day!! If I could have a say, RAIN FOR EVERYONE!

Cheers

Morning all! so glad we got dumped on last night yay!. now to see if the corn recovers. fingers crossed. it was going brown....past pineappled so i don't hold out much hope...but we'll see.

well, it's a bit late for the spring migration to have brought this avian flu in.....um. hopefully it's over soon but i guess it's time for everyone to get hyper-vigilent again! biosecurity and visitor logs and protect your own! We got through it the last time, hopefully we will get through it again this time.

yep, going to try to stop in on www on the way to montreal! yay! and dominion link too! only 3 birds in tow this time LOL. Gotta get myself packed yet...so much to do! Hay never arrived yesterday, no clue if it will come today or not.
ross, so glad she's not afraid of thunder and lightning! we have one that is a touch neurotic...but if we ignore him it's generally okay. grew up with one that had to hide in the closet and i swear he would lose 20 pounds every time a storm went through from shaking....
alright. gotta get going and get all this work done so i can get back home and start the weekend! whoohoo.
2 turkeys going tonight, and 12 chickens out last night and a turkey out last night....barn is getting emptier.....another 10 out soon (lady can't pick up until next weekend) and then boys to auction (probably a good 30 little munchkins going) and then everyone moves into the pens upstairs and freezer camp the older birds up there, and done. will be down to about 30 birds or so by the time it's all done. necessary evil.
hope everyone has a great day.

Well here we go again. I wonder how long it will take for auctions, sales and shows to cancel.

Just received an email from Troy. I would expect he will be posting here shortly.
This is message he sent:
"Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There has been an outbreak of low path H5 Avian Influenza in the Beamsville Ontario ( Niagara) area. It is a commercial duck operation . Currently there is a 3 KM restriction zone . No movement in or out of this zone.. this zone could be expanded to a 10 KM zone pending further testing of surrounding flocks. Heightened biosecurtity practices are being advised."

Glad some people got rain. Not a drop here. It did cool down a bit, but hoping local farmers have crop insurance this year.

Ross, glad to see you have a dog not afraid of much. Sounds like she's going to be a great companion in anything you need to do.

Hope you have a great trip WLLady!

Well off to build more broody coops. Had 2 more go on me yesterday.

Have a great day!

Just poured rain here. Wicked winds and power is out. 2 incubators wrapped to keep them warm.

It was raining so hard the ducks even ran for cover. I know a lot of farmers that will get a good sleep tonight. This rain has saved some of the fields. Don't know how the grain did. Will go for a drive in the morning.

Hope everyone has a safe, cool night.

Finally got a minute (or 10) ;) to read Jan's post.
The chickens you sold will be fine, 96% of things we worry about never happen, or as Autumn was told, you got to stop stalking your chickens ;)
Real bummer about the AI.
Still no rain here, clouds gather and then leave, heat lamp back on in the barn brooder, it was down to 18C last night and never got past 20C today.
Seems like this summer theme, either roast or freeze, nothing in between.

It just sprinkled here last night. Immeasurable. Nothing. Just a light wetting of the leaves. In fact, I think it evaporated on its way down.

Getting REAL tired of watering the garden. REAL. I spend an awful lot of time filling pails and moving soaker hoses. The well has never gone dry, but theres always a first time. Spring creek at the back of the farm is low. Gary has never seen it run so slowly.

Oh well. Hoping the banks don't foreclose on us, in a dry year. I'm not sure we will have enough hay for all the cattle either. Going to cut the front field.... its flowering, second year reseeded... but not very tall at all. Anywhere the alfalfa has been killed out by wet ground, well, theres white clover, and lawn grass. Maybe 2 inches high.

Why its raining all around us, and not here, is anyones guess. A dry summer is OK, but a few timely rains is nice.

Breeder coming to breed the white cow this morning. Bred another heifer yesterday morning. So..... 3 new heifers bred, and this morning a cow... and maybe her last years daughter we picked out. Looks like we will be dumping more older cows than I wanted, if it doesn't rain. We usually get rid of 4 or 5 every year, when we pick out 4 or 5 new ones.

Hopefully all these AI cattle catch. Been so freaking HOT too. Especially when they ride each other constantly in this hot humid weather, their bodies would likely kill the sperm inside them. We keep them inside after breeding, until the next day. Its hot in the barn, but shaded.... and they are by themselves. This will take the load off the new bull when he arrives. Hes only 2.

Well, I guess I'd better go out and commence the day. Going to spot water the squash, at least some of the plants are bushy enough to shade where the water lays. I planted them in kind of a hole to hold water. I'm sure the dry cracked ground all around them wicks some of their water.

Sigh.

Got rid of 34 cockerels at Hagersville yesterday. One was one I missed last time I went. A big one that hatched with the turkeys, lol. They won't mail the money, because of the possible strike. I'm thinking I may have taken 2 little ee pullets too. Sheesh.... when I picked them out of the cages, they were already inside the sale barn. I'm glad I didn't put them back in the truck to take home. Seeing as now there AI looming out there. Thought about it tho. I didn't know of that when I went to the sale.
