Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Wed Jun 01, 2016 8:36 am

morning all!
headed off to london for dinner and ct after work yesterday, were stupidly early and they got me in early and we were half way home again before the actual appointment time! LOL. so back home before dark too! which was awesome. still had enough time to close the girls in before the coons were out.
SOOOOoooooo. i will know on the 15th what is happening. hopefully. i have another set of xrays on the 15th, followed by the surgeon....and i think at that time we'll decide if surgery goes ahead or not.
and i'm back into my office again! whoohoo!!!! so, having officially moved into my office 15 days ago, i have actually managed to be IN my office for a total of 3 days! LOL.
Happy June 1 everyone! hoping to get the rest of the garden in this week/weekend. Maybe see Colin on saturday, and gotta touch base with austrilorp about my one hen....she is DEFINITELY broody....time to come and get her!! she's been sitting religiously for 5 days-not moving a muscle. off the nest once in the morning and once in the evening, big broody :poop: and the screaming and poofing and zenning flat to the nesting box....lol
i gave up and candled turkey eggs last night. all were rotten except one that looks very very slow. So i gave them each (i have 2 sitting) 2 welsummer eggs from the incubator that are due to hatch on friday. Hopefully they will and the jenny's will get up and eat something. they're getting thin, even with the food and water right in reach.
so. onwards. hope everyone has a great day!

Oh sorry about the eggs. I took them all away this am except one that had zipped. I'm hoping the little guy that hatched Monday can hang in there! There's food and water around but she keeps him under. They were mixed development and I'm sure that's from other "contributions" until I realised what was going on. Only one stinker though.

Its funny how some broodies, chickens or otherwise are so focused on the nest, that they DON'T hardly eat or drink. My turkey girl will actually be LAME, when I go in and push her off... shes not been on her feet for so long. She even POOPED those nice broody ones IN the nest twice!! BAD girl.

Right now, my red girl is sitting. 3 years old I think... got from Brebis...maybe 4? with 2 Toms.... one is with her, and shes committed. Didn't write down the date tho. Ugh. I gave her some Royal eggs.... she may have lay'd total 10 eggs this winter/spring. Getting older.

Got my squash planted, peppers in..... and weeded and watered for two days. Everything I planted needs constant watering, from the flowers to the veggies. Only those direct seeded haven't been watered. Amazing how my beans and cucumbers come up in dust. They ARE looking a little peak'ed tho.... the bean leaves are kind of that crinkled shape... and pointed upwards in prayer. Maybe water them today. Although its FREEZING out. Seems to go from 30C to 20C with that ever present wind, just to freeze me. I like it HOT. Humid not so much, but HOT. So there Sandy. You must appreciate today, lol.

New calf this morning. Red heifer, out of a cow we had for a long time. Shes gone... got jumped on last summer, or was it two summers ago... sheesh, time flies....must be two, because this heifer is two, and she was just a baby when the cow went down...... anyhow, bred her charolais... nice calf... but its trying to suck her brisket... bull must be.... and every time it does manage to get to her side, she does the dosie do, like new heifers do sometime. They both aren't too bright. I seen this at 6:30am this morning, and as of 8:30am, it still hasn't managed it. I will have to keep an eye, and maybe offer it a bottle of packaged colostrum. At least it will GET some, and maybe by then, it will be stronger, smarter... and mama will have settled down abit.

Don't like calving heifers particularly.

Blacksmith is coming today for the nags. I don't want them anymore. Long past the horse stage. I used to breathe/live for horses...... but don't have time to ride, or stuff... but Melissa likes them, they've always been here.... 2 born here, and now 14 and 17... and the most PERFECT horse, and you just don't get rid of horses like that..... but Melissa is pregnant, due July 7th.... going to nurse.... and honest to GAWD, I have NO idea when she will find the time to do anything with them THIS summer...................ugh. Not to mention they are a ROYAL pain in the butt where they are... in the 'pasture' with ALL the implements/wagons... hayshed with hay/straw thats needed daily, (although when he does go out for hay, he brings a few out for about 3 days)... and they like to run away, now that they know they can.....

Opening and closing the gate for someone that idles thru it with the tractor infuriates me beyond belief.

I've ranted enough. Time to go out and see about this calf. Have a great day!

Sometimes I forget how different we are from City Folks. I went and planted some spuds and fruit bushes and trees, milked the goats, gathered a few eggs, did morning chores and head to the house to put a big pot of water on to boil cause we need some chicken to eat. I get to my house and my Daughter and her city raised roommate are over for coffee. So dear daughter offers to help kill chickens in return for an invite to dinner. Her poor roommate tried to be brave but had to leave after the first cockerel lost his head :) I may not know how to use public transit, but I can feed myself.

So she's off the nest and out with at least one baby. There is another empty shell in the coop so I'm hoping this ams kid is under her still.
Yup there it is looking confused with the WTH expression!

Yup..started drizzling bout a half hour ago...hope it stays for a couple of days...broody is still on her nest...i dont know anything bout broody...we'll see i guess...education every day...

Goatgal, yeah, people are out of touch with where their food comes from..I'm glad i have the chance to live this life and pass on the concepts to my family at least...although a saughterhouse situation, where virtually all society's meat comes from these days, is hard to take...even I have dificulty with that...i did the cockerals in here with the cone and cutting the throat ..i think tital beheading right off will be the next time...faster

BVF you must be almost finished with the calving now?! how many so far?

well, turned on the sprinklers in the garden last night and it started to rain, turned off the sprinkler and the rain quit....um....hm. not nearly enough rain, really only sprinkled for about 10 minutes! we need a good soaker...gentle rain ALL day kind of rain. guess i should have left the water sprinkler on while it was raining!

hopefully i can get the rest of the garden planted soon! i looked at things last night just before dark and it looks like i have some hungry cutworms. sigh. guess the chickens didn't get them all after tilling. they seem to really like the onions....go figure. i only planted about 300 LOL. still have all the squash to put in and broccoli and cauliflower and some head lettuce. and the sweet potatoes. saturday :-)

got the vet report yesterday on the lumps they took off tango. only 1 was grade 1 cancer, and the margins were clean so she considers him cured of the mast cell cancer! YAY! we'll keep an eye on him. the others were all lumps and bumps of a benign origin...mostly hair follicles gone "awry"...make him bumpy but won't kill him. so that's really really good. AND he still has all his stitches and staples! amazing. we'll take those out this weekend-when my hubby can sit on him and i'll take them out while he's wrestling. should be fun! the vet had us try a "new collar" that's just come on the market. it's inflatable, looks like a kid's inner tube for swimming (in fluorescent blue LOL). blow it up and put it on his neck, like a huge poofy collar. it actually worked! it didn't rub the stitches in his neck at all, and he can't turn his head far enough to chew his other stitches or reach his tummy/back leg. and he can't scratch his neck with his back foot! so it's all good! he did however, manage to take it off twice and chew the velcro off it...bad dog. easy repair though. and probably just because his skull is so narrow. if he were a st bernard or something he'd never get it off.

okay, june 15 i will make a decision on the piknik once i talk with the surgeon again. hopefully we can get this all settled and move forward. i'm getting a bit tired of being poked and prodded, although the CTs and MRIs and all that are really cool pieces of equipment, i'd rather be on the OUTSIDE of them for a while, not the inside....as far as i know i have 2 or 3 more xrays coming up and thats it. finished irradiating myself for a little while....hopefully.

hope everyone has a great day!

Ok soo my speckled sussex hen who has been sitting under my back porch for over 35 days final came out for a drink when I was actually out in the yard...hubby and I chased her around and finally caught her and we locked her up. She smells sooo bad...the entire yard smells like a mountain of rotten coons and to top it off our old dog went under the porch and rolled/ate the eggs! I feel bad for the hen she was determined, but honestly aside from the stench and the damn dog I am actually happy not to have anymore chicks, we are busting at the seams around here!

Morning everyone.

Woke to a thunderstorm and rain. I HATE thunder and lightening, I know what a suck, but boy did we need that rain. Not enough rain, but some is better than none.

The form is now operational for thr PTO PikNik. If you're attending pls fill it out when you get a few moments. Thanks!

Worked outside all day yesterday. Pens got cleaned, gardens got done, grass got cut and just some other stuff that needed to be done. Got covered in no-see-um bites. They are sooooo itchy. Had a good sleep on benedryl LOL, or I would of scratched myself into a crime scene. All I could think is I'd much rather be shovelling snow and making snow angels and having a snow ball game with my dog. I throw and he tries to catch it. After 8 years you'd think he would figure out you can't catch a snowball and return it, but he is blonde. HAHA. (Sorry. Booo!)

Errands and work today. Did I mention I'm getting a pup? I'm busting at the seams. It's going to be a long 9 weeks for y'all reading that on a regular basis :)

Trying to cut the grass, but this princess didn't want to move her suntanning butt!!!

Bed all weeded, in between the beds weeded and soil flipped. Everything is growing great. My oregano seems to be struggling a little bit, so I'm going to give it some extra water to see if we can get it nice and full. Found a green caterpillar on my Brussel sprouts eating the leaves. Almost brought out the crossbow but figured I could handle it without. So I put him in the compost pile. If I find him or any family members in my garden again ... Toast!

Hope everyone has a great day!!! Looks like more rain coming! Yay!!
