Re: You farm "Oops"ies - let's share funny stories
We have a 14' trailer that has been gutted and used as a chicken trailer...behind it I have one of those 20x10' garage type things with the tarp roof, all fenced in with chainlink and a man door at the end...both units move together..the trailer dragging the pen behind. Fully knowing that the way I did the hook could someday lock me in if there was any wind, I always put a waterer or a pail of feed by the door to hold it open...until one windy day and the (empty...duh....bucket) goes sailing across the field, I had just filled all of the feeders (easetroughs running the length of the enclosure) and all but 2 of the broilers were outside carrying on like crazy...with me locked inside this cage in the field...the chickens figured out they could get their heads through the chainlink, but I wasn't getting out anytime soon. We spent too much time building this thing and I didn't want to wreck it....so thank god for cellphones...I called one of the kids and had them come out to the field and save me...with one promise...only we would know about this around here. I felt like a big ass.
We also have a couple of pet pigs...the pot belly (our first) is glued to me like a best friend, she spent the first 8 months of her time here in the house, before we rescued a pet pig and gave it to her...yep, our pet pig has her own pet pig....I talk to all of our animals a lot...but she has conversations....about 2 months ago I was filling waterers and slipped while trying to avoid a muscovy drake...thankfully I didn't step on him but it turned out to be like the beginning of a keystone cops type thing with water flying everywhere...boards getting knocked over...chickens running for it and just a mess overall. I can here this cackling laugh and look over at Sweetie the pig and I swear she is laughing her ass off at me...I didn't want to believe it at first...but have since "tested her" with the kids around by dropping stuff and swearing on purpose sending chickens running...and sure enough...sends her into hysterics. One hell of a laugh too...I really need to get a video of it.

I did that as well as a kid Farrier, my younger cousin dared me... WOWZERS talk about a life lesson, respect that darn fence LOL.
another life lesson I leaned a few years ago is dont set live traps inside buildings. I had something chewing up eggs so i set a trap in the front half of my layer coop at the old place. Well i was collecting eggs one day when the dog started going friggin nutz. then I smelled it... SKUNK! and then again and then again. she got sprayed in the face, I took indirect hits. it friggin sucked! I got a sheet and something long to grab the trap, got er outside, took care of the skunk, it sprayed a few more times, it friggin sucked, i got the trap n skunk in the bucket of the Massey 1250 (not mine wish it was) and took it back to the bush to dispose of. that part went fine, little muddy mostly frozen, dropped off the skunk turned around and then the fun began... the partially frozen ground seemed to turn into full out mud. I had to put the trap on the 3 point hitch so i could use the bucket to dig my way through. the massey is a 4x4 but had turf tires, go figure. it took me 5 mins to get to the bush and about 45 to get home AND I flattened the darn trap when I ran it over!!! I reaked like skunk and was covered in mud. the bucket on the tractor smelled worse than me and the entire tractor was covered in mud! Oh it sucked!
While i was screwing around back there Lizzie had immediately washed the dog, i forget exactly, vinagar, rinse, dishsoap, rinse n repeat or something like that. the dog didnt smell AT ALL!
I washed the tractor n treated the bucket with vinagar n dishsoap as well and when I was finally done all the screwing around I too had the vinagar dishsoap clense...
Life lesson... dont set live traps inside building. and possibly headshots on a skunk may not let them spray again... iv yet to have a chance to test that theory out and im happy with that! LOL
the coop took months to not reak like skunk anymore.
traps are set 24/7 365, outside and in clear view.

Worst oops I ever did was, when I was fairly new to chickens (I still am). I went into the coop with something new...I don't remember now what it was, but this little feisty blue ameraucana just freaked completely out! Our coop has basically a wall of windows to the south and they open...which on that day they were. The problem is we have 1" hardware mesh on the outside of the windows to keep critters from getting in. Again one of those to do lists... we hadn't fashioned a bug screen on the inside yet. We'll when she freaked out she got on the window still and proceeded to wedge herself between the hardware mesh and the window! I had to pry it open with a crowbar that barely worked, it was I little big for the job. (my boyfriend is a wood worker and had most of his tools at work with him) it took me longer than I would have liked to get her out, and that poor hen didn't lay an egg for days.. now I know if I'm going in there with something they have never seen before go SLOWLY. .LOL
