Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Sun May 15, 2016 2:03 pm

wow guys! i'm off the forum for a few days and i need an entire day to catch up!!!! more later, when the sun is down and the chores are done. LOL.
more not so nice news from the surgeon has me contemplating the future. one more CT to go...then back for more facet injections, and a few more questions for the surgeon, and a big decision to make-things got very complicated with the new MRI and xray results. never spent 2 hours with any doctor before...had a really good conversation, very matter of fact, open and honest....i do trust him...lots and lots to think about.

Listen all you YOUNG folks out there-if you have ANY nagging pain, no matter how little, if it nags you, go and don't take "there's nothing wrong" as an answer. if they tell you it's in your head, find another doctor. rattle cages until someone listens. don't take NO as an answer. and i'm being 100% dead serious about this....if just ONE of you listens to me and avoids this kind of crap in your future it is worth me saying it.

i cannot believe it is SNOWING out there. seriously?!?! good thing i didn't plant anything yet....well, nothing sprouted yet....LOL.
i'm not even sure that the chickens are coming out of the coop today.
windy, cool.....but at least there's some sunny periods.

hope everyone has an awesome day, sorry if i'm not around as much in the next few days-it's not you guys! but i do need to hit that ameraucana vs ee thread....lol.

Congrats KB! Not a problem Ross!

These are the James Marie Farms Jumbo Coturnix that Perry Schofield imported. JMF created this line of Jumbos I believe and restored the Texas A&M to true Jumbo size... These lines of quail are the only ones I know of that reach a Pound. Perry is the only one known to have legally imported these birds into Canada... Im Soooo glad to be working with the Jumbos!

there are a couple tricks to achieving the full Jumbo size. first off is feed, day one and for the first few days feed a gambird diet of 30% protein that has been turned to a powder, after they have grown a bit full size starter is fine, always fresh water, a lot more heat and longer than one would think is normal and last but not least 24 hours of light. after 7-8 weeks they will be full grown and laying, then the lights can be turned off. JMF keeps all his birds under 24 hours of light fully acknowledging that it shortens there lifespan but the birds are not usually kept longer than a year anyways. I dont usually provide supplemental light to induce laying and let nature do its thing. my birds are a bit over a year old. If one dosent brood jumbo chicks like this they will loose the potential to reach a pound but the offspring will still carry the genes and have the potential if brooded the recommended way.

And man are they ever tasty birds Eh Ross!

Good question - I gave her 7 in total and I don't know if she added at all. Time will tell. I think this happens every time we have visitors - little fuzzies arrive LOL!

Congrats KB

my first ever turkey eggs in my incubator are due May 24th I am dying to see what hatches, especially the BSW x Artisan Gold crosses.

My 2 broody turkeys got off their eggs briefly when I fed them some BOSS they must be sitting on close to 20 eggs.

My turkeys sitting had an awful stink last night and 3 exploded eggs. I dont think shes going to hatch anything. Other turkey eggs under second broody got candled and 9 of 11 were good! So she is sitting and i am going to scoop two for other turkey tonight-if no one hears from me again she has killed me. Lol. Last time i candled i needed a rake for protection.....

My clydesdale sized manure rake seems to work pretty well, and leaving the light off LOL. my red is so nice, she just lets me reach under her. i thought about just trying to give her a couple of poults, but she doesn't respond at all to their chirping-and even when i push them under and take out the eggs she still sits like zen...the bronze eggs have another 10 days or 2 weeks or so to go...so she can sit and hopefully hatch. i did change out all the shavings under her. i will suit up and glove up and rake up and take my flashlight and see what happens. in a few minutes....after i have a tea or something...

dr asked me to get my core strength and aerobic capacity way up as good as i can before surgery to make recovery better (assuming we can DO surgery-need another CT for that one). well....trying.....he said it was going to hurt. a lot. no friggin kidding. after my family dr has me doing nothing for 8 months :gaah: after i'm done ticking off the turkeys i think i'm done for today. going to go and find a nice smooth flat hard piece of floor and lay down for a while with my knees up. maybe sleep there tonight. :sighke1: it feels better that way..... sAng_rantTealc: trying to do leg raises....reminds me of this poor bugger not being able to "get out" :eggyolk: i feel like gravity glues my feet to the floor and then laughs hysterically. :gaah:

clawton came today and got a couple of calico turkeys from me, i think possibly a pair, but i'm not sure about the one, could be a boy or girl...lol. certainly the other was strutting, so i'm sure at least its a boy! and one duck hatched in the incubator so far, another 9 or so are pipped. man, vivid yellow. and i have no clue what i was expecting, but huge orange webbed feet made me laugh. i'll need to rethink my waterer...their bills are quite a bit wider than a chickens....um. again, not sure what i was expecting LOL as clawton said so eloquently "webbed feet are very common in ducks"....lol

set my last set for me this year on friday. given that i don't know what will happen in the future i set some from each of my lines, hopefully the next generation of birds....we'll have to see how it goes, i guess if surgery etc is sooner than later then i can always turn off the incubator and toss the eggs, or hatch and sell them all. i do still have some in the incubator to hatch next week for orders, and then of course the wyoming sale is coming up fast.
i'm trying not to jump to any erroneous defeatist conclusions about the future, but i think i need to also be realistic. and i don't think i can rely on other people to do my chores for me for an entire year.....my hubby says it's nothing, but.....that's an awfully long time.

still waiting for my census form.....they have to send someone out with it because we don't exist in the computer. the entire road does not exist. our address...nothing. nadda. doesn't matter that we pay taxes, had a building permit, 2 registered businesses and a 911 sign AND get bills delivered almost daily, we don't exist. pretty cool! :idunno: and somehow our LAST census form reached us, AND this years agricultural census too. go figure.

have a great night everyone.....
