Good Morning!

Post by hayladee » Fri May 06, 2016 9:59 am

Morning all, sitting here and finally caught up on the last two weeks of posts....lots of babies bursting out up there in Canada too, huh? We have at least 18fullblood piedmontese calves on the ground and 11 1/2bloods from first time heifers. that Dexter bull we used for the first timers is really a great cross, the heifers literally spit those lil things out and they are up and aggressively chasing those inexperienced mommas around demanding their first meal within an hour!@! amazing!! LOVE IT !!!! So funny watching the heifers circling around wondering what that lil thing is doing trying to eat them, lol.
Out of 41 eggs in the hovabator.... we have 32chicks...great hatch and lively and colorful group. I don't know which chicks came from which eggs though so will be interesting trying to guess their heritage. I have black, blue, cream, chipmunk colored, lilac colored and looks likes like splash, the grands love them and are already talking about setting another bunch.... and so I guess I will.... they have over rode my limited hatching willpower... lol and with three adults and 5 active young'uns in the house....whats a little chick dust??
Well I have to get out to the barn, had an older cow calve 4 days ago and she pushed her uterus, DD put it back in and gave her an oxy shot and left her to stand in the head lock for an hour....where she promptly must have tried to lay down and hung herself.... beautiful heifer calf then went to drink on the other new mom in the pen with her....limited milk on that lady so when hub left her drink I flipped and ran out and tossed her through the head locks to start on a bottle.....little bullhead would NOT take bottle ...fought with her for 3 days... ended up tubing milk into her to keep her alive. Yesterday had a young cow calving and she had it 1/2 out when she got hammered by an old b**** and fell, must have broke a rib in calf...blood poured from its nose and it died soon as it was out..... told DD we'd maybe try the orphan on her, smeared afterbirth on orphan and prepared to fight to get it to nurse .....the little poop....RAN over to the cow whose calf didn't make it and about sucked her to pieces!.... could have clobbered the little witch after making me break my back for 3 days force feeding it! Oh well, joys of animals.... giving chicks their first drink is soooooo much easier! later all, Hay

ah, animals. got to love to hate to love them. LOL i am SO glad i do NOT have cows. or sheep. i do however, have a horse with an abscess again in his foot. looking miserable....and apparently apples make it feel better somehow. LOL. so he's all wrapped up and poulticed, that comes off tonight or tomorrow and then the clay goes in, and hopefully that will be that. farrier caught it while it was small thankfully.

well, i slept about 2 hours last night all between 5 and 7 this morning after an entire night of pain, painkillers and freezing wearing off and muscle spasms. finally eased up at 5....and i slept like a baby until 7 for the first time in about 4 years. i hope tonight is good too. still some sore in my back, my left leg is totally numb like if you've ever had freezing at the dentist-the way your mouth/cheek feels....kinda stomping around because it feels weird. but very little pain....i'm a bit worried it's because of the amount of fluid pumped into the joint has squished the nerves completely...but dr said it will be sunday before it's all absorbed, and if its squished now it will unsquish and i will know it. otherwise the numbness should gradually go away without pain coming back. my fingers are so crossed. but he didn't rupture the cyst. he already knows that. so. 50/50 chance right now. if i HAVE to go back in 3 months for another, i will, it's not pleasant, but it's not that bad either....really just the first freezing is bad...after that it's nothing....
can't wait to walk a bit, or stand for a bit to see how that is-usually i have about 100 yards or 10 minutes standing before i have to sit to stop the scream in my back. fingers crossed!

and it's friday! 22 odd chicks to go out to new homes tonight, and then pen cleaning, lettuce planting, leek planting and potatoes to go in. and sleep. and hubby needs to try his luck for second turkey. we bought new shells and i guess the old ones are well, getting old. didn't feel shooting my old ones but the new ones...wow. i won't be shooting them again this spring! i used my seal already, so i'll go out and call and see if i can't be really sexy and call them in for my hubby to fill his second tag. :-)

hopefully a nice weekend, and hopefully a visit from BVF depending on calving! yay! maybe some soap making too....i have loads of old oil to clean...and i want to take the ash and make homemade leached lye with it :-)

hope everyone has a great day!

Going to get a Rain Barrel, in CT, or perhaps should wait a bit ? ;)
Girls are laying up a storm, hoping to set eggs on Monday, god willing and the creek don't rise ;)
Have a safe one!

good morning everyone. Flying visits this weekend from BVF, chicken ninja and red ninja....nice to see everyone!
beautiful weekend. the weather was just gorgeous. got potatoes planted, and peas, and some lettuce...spinach. cleaned up some pens in the barn, and worried over my broody turkey mom that still doesn't have poults :-( hopefully soon! had a little bonfire last night on the patio, enjoying the evening. then it got cold...?! lol. hopefully we're almost done with this frost thing.....
chicks hatching today in the incubator for that custom incubation, so far 6 of the 8 are pipped/zipped/zipping, so hopefully a good hatch.
ticks are out en force now....yuck. hate those things. had a tick burning ceremony yesterday afternoon after finding one in the front hallway...probably came in on the dog or something. and hubby chased a turkey up and down the woods, just to have it appear strutting away in the NW corner 10 minutes after legal. LOL. tom was out with a hen this morning too...same place....too bad it's monday.....he lives another week. LOL nice to see them. hens are sitting on nests now, only see them a couple times a day. well, back to it. have a great day everyone.

Good Morning Everyone,
I hope you all had a nice Mom's Day weekend. I had a good time with the Kids and Grandbabies on Saturday. I worked Sunday morning and got a lot done here in the afternoon. I got half the rabbit cages cleaned and then ended up in the middle of a squabble with the horses. I have a gelding that I need to put some work into, he is a bit of an ass. So Grandma got a bit banged up. Getting older sucks. When I was younger things just didn't hurt as much. I'm sitting on the couch sipping coffee trying to convince myself to get out to the barn and finish those last 40 cages and then get the brooders cleaned. Have a great day everyone.

I hear you on the hurts and healing LOL! Thing is getting older may suck but it beats the alternative. Got up this am to a hard frost! My potatoes were in last week. Need to do peas and stuff, put swiss chard in yesterday.

Good morning!! We've had frost the last two mornings. Someone back in the Westover area... North of here, has had corn in for two weeks now. The ground is COLD. BIG field too. Oh well. Some people get in an awful hurry. The big ass farmers with over 1000 acres especially. One guy back there last year, had to replant a field. Seed corn is so expensive too.

This week is supposed to be nice... but then only forecasting 10-11C for this coming weekend. Ugh. Caught my 4th mouse on the porch this morning. They have been coming in (stupid porch is kinda pulling away from the house), and eating bird seed all winter. 3 in the trap, and one this morn in the tin cat. Hes swimming right now.

Had a nice visit with WLLady, short, but sweet. Got some strawberry plants from her. Haven't planted them yet, should do that today. Still in the bag/water. So cold tho, lol. Hopefully no wind today.

Had a nice bull calf last night. Had supper at Jess' and Dave' with her family. Her dad and brother watched the birth. Good thing we were watching, after the head came out (the bag still wasn't broken), went down, and she'd pushed it all the way out after I just got out there. I watched for a bit, to see what would happen. The bag was fully on the head, to the waist. The cow of course, gets up and licks the back legs. There was alot of fluid around the calfs' nose and mouth of course, and it wasn't breathing when I took it off. Good thing mama was OK with me there, as i had to slap it around a little, and stick a straw piece up its nose. That got it coughing. Very watery/coughing up the stuff. If we had of found it in the morning, if she'd calved overnight, dead... we would have figured it born dead. That wouldn't have been the case however, she would have had it all cleaned off long before morning. Scary.

Well, I supposed I should go out. tagging and bagging... and vaccinating need to be done. Good to do that before they can outrun you, lol. Gary must be finished feeding silage now.

Grass cutting today too! again.
