Good Morning!

Well I finally fired up my Hovabator on April 20th, I picked up a dozen cream legbar and 2 dozen BC Marans eggs in my travels recently. The Legbar eggs are looking good, the BC marans is looking like very few are fertile (the breeder was having issues with fertility, so these were "trial" eggs, was hoping fertility was going to be good, but does not look like it). So looks like I will have to get some more BC Marans eggs.

I also had 28 Bielefelder eggs arrive on Wednesday from Nova Scotia. So I set up my 2nd Hovabator, I will candle them on Monday and see how they look. Since I had space in the incubators, and wasting space is a bad thing, so I added 20 of my turkey eggs (Beltsvilles and Beltsville x Artisan Golds) on Thursday.

I also picked up my small order from Performance Poultry yesterday, a few exchequer leghorn pullet chicks and a few Mottled Houdan straight run chicks.

Oh ya I ordered 10 Cornish X meat chickens and 6 Artisan gold poults from my feed store for June.

Lunch is over, time to go do some work.

Good morning!! Its a rainy one. Puddles even. Fog too.

Had to put that premie calf down last night. It sure tried hard to survive. But another new calf yesterday brought our total to 3 now. All black heifer calves. Well, two are a real mousy dark grey, nearly black.

I had a crappy hatch of late, well, two.... and someone contacted me a few days ago, and wanted to know if I had chicks, or hens... or something for their boy who has just started poultry 4-H. The grandfather of the boy said they wanted 6.... (I have 10 older ones in the back room), but I think I will keep them, and give them the 4 I have upstairs. Hopefully there are at least two pullets in there. If not, oh well. I know there are three EO's and a barred rock. He should have fun with them. I won't charge them anything. Nice to see kids getting involved in farm stuff. Grandpa owns a farm, and keeps layers, but these kids and their parents live in town. Thinking the chicks will stay at the farm, not sure.

I guess today is a cleaning day, seeing as how the rains are here, and cold still. I sure hope it warms up soon. My lettuce, radishes and peas are up tho! Surprizing with this frigid weather.

Yesterday I went out and bought 7 Haskap berry shrubs. I thought I would look up more info on them, so I googled them and it took me to Veseys site. Holy, they are charging $21.95 for ONE plant, two years old, in a 4" pot!!!! I bought all 7 in gallon pots, BIG plants for $6.99 each. If your thinking of buying big for your property, go to this nursery. Its on the 5th concession in Flamborough... and carry a huge selection of just about everything you can think of. And the plants are gorgeous and healthy!!!!!!! Trees and shrubs too.

Sorry to hear about the calf, it's always hard to take when livestock dies.

BVF, i am told that haskaps were for Saskatchewan and here they may flower before the bees and polinators are active. Some quebecuers have had success putting them in partial shade, or shade part of the day. This delays flowering for a week or two. Good luck with them.

Good morning,
Started the day on a happy note, while reading the paper, came across a picture of Jockey Mario Gutierrez (odds on favorite to vin the Kentucky Derby) with his beautiful wife and their pet chicken. :) BTW looks like a more or less Ameraucana ;)
Goal for today, wrap the remaining hedges in fruit tree netting, because the deer continue to strip what remains of my cedar hedges. It looks like they have not moved on to other things as they have in previous years and will only stop when there is no greenery left.
Venison anyone?

Oh great. Thought it was too good a plant to be true, LOL. A shrub with hardly any pests? Well, I know my bees have been out plenty early around here.... when the snowdrops are blooming, so hopefully I will get some berries. They have flower buds hanging on them already.

Had a new calf last night. Big red bull. So... thats 3 heifers, and 1 bull. Everyone is doing great! Another 3 or 4 will pop soon. Looking pretty sloppy 'back there'.

Another rainy dreary day. My mom came and spent the night, after spending the day with my sister, because her dog just is the biggest PITA. I went to see it the other day, for the first time. 7 month old rotti... and the thing seriously doesn't leave you along. Paws at you, jumps on/at you, licks you, jumps all over your feet.... I ended up slapping it off more than a few times, when I had had enough, and left. Geezus. Train your damn dog sister. So, last night she stayed here... then off early to go for bloodwork in Cambridge. They still insist on coming down here for their Dr.'s and eye Dr's and Ear Dr.s blah blah. Oh well. If they want to drive 3 hours one way, thats their priority. I do notice my mother repeating things to me, and twice, within seconds of the first time. Memory's going down the tubes. Shes 73 I believe.

I hear her coming in now, to pick up something Melissa dropped off, after coming BACK from Cambridge to visit a friend.

Have a good day!!
