to connect the 6 pcs, you need to open 5 links.

I got 6 pieces of chain with 5 links each (30 links) need 5 cuts and welds to make one chain. So at $25 each, that's $125. So the blacksmith is cheaper.
The blacksmith could have done it two ways, he could take one length of chain (5 links,) cut each of those links off and used the cut links to stick the other pieces of chain together, or he could have cut one end link of each chain and used it to attach the next piece of chain. Either way takes 5 cuts to make a 30 link chain.
If he only needed 29 links, he would have had to have made only 4 cuts by cutting off each link of one of the 5 link chain pieces, and had a whole link left over for other things.
The other way, if he cut the end links and used them to attach the pieces, he would have used 5 cuts and welds to attach the pieces of chain, but he would have had to have cut the last one off and would have had to have made 6 cuts for a a 29 link chain.
Soooooooo if you were an evil blacksmith looking to make a profit, (for a 29 link chain) you'd use the second method, link the end pieces, make a 30 link chain and cut the last one off to make a 29 link chain, using 6 cuts to make an extra $50 bucks.
If you were are farmer
looking to save money, or a good blacksmith,
you'd cut the one piece up into separate links to make a 29 link chain using 4 cuts/welds.

As far as the first one- Well you are down to 0 for now- unless you are Mr. Visa. Then, when the person you loaned that 2 bucks to pays it back in 45 years, you'll have made $47,892.22 profit. Just kidding- no I'm not! How come banks get away with legal extortion?????? If I tried to do that I'd go to jail.
