Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Sun Apr 17, 2016 4:27 pm

Good afternoon all! Ok...28c here. Its definitely an improvement over last weekends weather! Everyone is a bit warm though...um.....not complaining! Just opening everything up wide....
Fans going in the barn loft. Flies EVERYWHERE...they hatched or whatever flies do...the house in the sun is coated. Chickens have full tummies, full crops and are all laying under my truck in the shade. Theres no leaves on the trees yet....
Brought up the patio chairs. Nice little bonfire last night. Beautiful stars. Even saw a shooting star. Have all the windows open. Poults are doing great with mom! She has 7 with her now. My other jenny is sitting on 11 eggs. And the bronze girl has stashed 3 so far....buried them well and adding 1 a day. Wild turkeys are strutting in the north field. Horses are brushed-i could sell build your own pony kits lol. And we discovered that you CAN shoot popcorn from a muzzleloader quite effectively for starling control....scared them out of the barn yesterday-they didnt come back until this morning! Cleaned out the layer coop to with hubbys help-okay...hubby shovelled it out thank you martin! Saves my back a bit. Going to drop the plywood off the horse stall walls now....just a gorgeous weekend.

Lovely morning here. My Jennie that did such a good job last year is still in the nest box coop so I gave her the last of the pedigreed eggs. Got away fairly unscathed but she did give me that "stupid human, doesn't know where eggs go" look as she carefully rolled them under her! Fingers crossed. Guess I'd better pull the ad for hatching eggs LOL!

Good morning!
Bit overcast here, better get going to let everybody out before the rains come.
Plan for tomorrow, get in the truck and drive until I use up all the gasoline I saved up in the 6 weeks of forced confinement, might be suffering from delayed cabin fever. :)
Incredible number of birds this spring must be a reward for last year shortage.
Beside the usual overwintering birds, plenty of Robins (had none last year) both Pileated and Downy woodpeckers, both white & red-breasted Nuthatch,Mourning doves, Mallards & Wood ducks nesting in the marsh and of course the ruddy hawks.:)
Have a safe one!

Yay! hopefully she'll sit and be a good mom too KB. i'm impressed with my jenny. she's just about a year old. she's still hissing at me, but didn't do the beak swipe when i filled the feeder last night, she just called the 7 munchkins over to check it out :-) Looks like another wonderfully beautiful day outside today! barn is opened up to let the breeze through, and everyone seems happy and just "hanging out". had a visitor bring some apples for the horses yesterday, so they're all happy, and looking for more LOL. Opened up the front on the horse stall yesterday (thanks to my hubby doing most of the work again), so now at least the horses can see IN. we close it off in the winter to keep the wind from roaring through, so now it helps for ventilation, plus i can see what they're doing LOL
actually had a very busy weekend, company yesterday, and some other friends dropped in so their grandkids could see some baby animals. LOL. they stopped in to see the turkeys and the chickens and of course, the MASSIVE horses (the kids were maybe 4 and 6 yo, almost up to ted's tummy in height). and then off to the neighbours to see the lambs and calves. They are all from the city....nice to see the kids having fun. and a couple of moulted turkey feathers went home with each of the kids. :-) Then raking up all the dead stuff out of gardens, burned that in the bonfire last night. makes awesome firestarter. patio furniture up and onto the swept off patio, the dirt and salt washed off the vehicles, the one shed cleaned out, the greenhouse opened (didn't move plants yet, but will either tonight or tomorrow), opened up the stall in the barn, cleaned out all the starling nests from over the sliding doors in the barn. no eggs in them yet, so i'm sure they'll all have them rebuilt in about half an hour. cleaned out the layer coop, right down to bare coop floor and walls. figured out where to run the fence once we tear down the old shed/run in, and got part of the garden prepared for planting.
Got a message that someone wants/needs duck eggs incubated, so looks like i may have 100 odd duck eggs arriving sometime to incubate. should be interesting! AND out of 35 turkey eggs put into the incubator, 29 hatched. 2 more are pipped, i think the other 4 are done. so i have a brooder full of little fuzzies, and the ones in the barn are growing like weeds! now when the boys strut they're about the size of a volleyball as opposed to a softball LOL. they're so funny when they do that. Next hatch is set for may 2-3-chickens, and May 9 for the second broody turkey (of course, she sits beside the nesting box, and rolled all the eggs out of the box all the way into the corner and is sitting on them there....lol...guess my nesting box isn't good enough!). Very glad to hear that some of the eggs for farrier hatched! Now onwards into another beautiful day! hope everyone has a great one

Its a lovely day finally!! Not much wind.... and I had to go to town for a bee sting. Then to Metro for broccoli/cauliflower on sale..... and the bank, then the library to drop stuff. Home to a bagel/coffee.... and now I will go see if I can dig my rototiller out, and do a spot and get the lettuce in the ground!! I have a ton to do. Clean the spot for the strawberry plants that came last Friday. Still in plastic. Better open those, so they aren't rotting!!

Have a great day!

good morning everyone! another beautiful morning.
full moon last night-must have been, or pretty close....the crowing started in my barn at 330am. then the turkeys out in the woods started at 4am....lol. we had the windows open last night, 11C, sooooo nice! fresh air, nice tiny breeze, comfy for sleeping. love it! :wee:

this weekend is garden prep weekend. yay! can't wait. and plants to go to the green house. clawton brought me eggs to hatch (LOTS!!!) and some leeks that were extra from his plant collection for the garden. mmmm can't wait to have a garden this summer and start eating "real" vegetables again! my strawberries are growing (need thinning something fierce this year-i'll probably run the tiller down the middle of the patch), and rhubarb is up about 2 inches. the asparagus won't be far behind! can't wait for that. going to get some lettuce in and spinach hopefully. and then have to get planting some flats with the broccolli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, onions...i'm so far behind....was going to do that last weekend but then it snowed and freezing rained...so didn't get into the greenhouse at all. this weekend! :farmer: and also this weekend it's :big chicken: LOL. i have 10 cockerels that have to go...maybe 11....and then 3 pullets go off to a new home for the summer on a "rental" for the summer. gets them out of my hands so i don't have to feed them. hm...i need to switch my week from a 2 day weekend 5 day working to 5 day weekend and 2 day working, so i can get everything done at home! LOL oh yeah and manure spreading season too-going to clean up the manure pile so we can start a new one LOL.

jenny is being a perfect mom. all 7 chicks are doing fine, and can kick shavings almost 2 feet! LOL. i took the tom out and he went frantic, so i put him back in, and he's been looking after the kids too! very gentle, doesn't step on them (mom does sometimes) and actually laid down and let the kids go underneath him while the jenny was eating and drinking :-) good dad too. :turkey:

now the sportsman is full to the top. clawton brought over the overflow from his sportsman for me to incubate. muscovies and buff ducks and some marans. so they're all in the bator perking along.... :xfingers: hatch days every monday in may now except the last week.....going to be a busy busy month!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
