Somewhat disappointed

Post by Colleen Kinzie » Tue Mar 29, 2016 5:30 pm

Just candles eggs for 2nd time. Day 14. 15 eggs of questionables were definitely not good :gaah:
3 I think I'll go down and candle again as I'm sure by now I should definitely be able to tell One has sort of a solid area although not dark but has blood vessels. So I may leave that one
22 with live chicks :yippie: :yippie: :yippie:
I'm posting a pic of one that was not good. When I broke it open. It had yolk on one end. Bubble on other end? The rest were just like a regular egg
Can anyone tell me if this was just the air cell? And if so why didn't all the others I broke look like this?
Thx

Did they get frozen? Could be why they didn't hatch, they look a bit like mine that get froze.

I don't think so Kenya. But then again with only 22 out of 53 eggs I guess anything is possible
Only 1 had this though?

Now this is maybe a stupid question........but is there such a bird that cannot reproduce?
Just like people, birds can be sterile. There is the possibility that the two white ones are sterile, and may or may not have something to do with their time at hatchery, or possibly just genetics.

Congrats on the eggs that are developing!! Hope they all make it to hatch!

But if they were "sterile" would they still be laying eggs???

Thanks Paula
Even though the odds were not very good for fertility I'd be happier than a pig in poop if I ended up with that many live chicks!!

I think they could. They probably have an issue with something in the yolk that stops any embryonic growth. Which sucks that stuff like this stays invisible for so long. Would be nice to be able to know before growing them out.

Yes a sterile hen can lay eggs. So the ovum is the spot on the yolk...the yolk can be ovulated without an ovum on it. Then the egg is formed around the yolk. The only difference is there will be no white spec on the sterile females yolk. If there is a spot then it may be the boy is not fertile...

The egg with the big bubble at the one end either has bacteria in the air sac making gas and enlarging the air sac or there is a crack in the shell causing the yolk etc to shrink a bit stretching the air sac out. Or it froze...if the yolk seems grainy in texture it froze.
