Good "morning", all! Well, it IS sort of my morning, being a third shifter...the fact that I've been up since ten this morning notwithstanding!
VERY busy few days: first, seed event last sunday put on by perth farmers market. The Legion really is too small a venue for it, and people were packed shoulder to shoulder. We didn't stay long, but I managed to pick up a couple of things I needed AND finally got to taste some of Dale's (Kricklewood Farm) delicious garlic sunflower oil. It's SO good on bread, WOW! Then yesterday, went out to the barn around 11 in the morning, all was well and good, everything seemed normal, gutter is STILL not thawed enough to run it and clean out barn...but when I went back out there for evening chores, SURPRISE!!! 4 brand new baby goat kids! Ma has female twins and Aggie has a boy and a girl, must have been seconds from each other because one of each set was still rumpled and damp looking. All strong, big and healthy, all nursing. Our very first goatlets, and I have to say, they are quite possibly the cutest things on earth. I'm sorry I missed the big events, but relieved at the same time, because I likely would have been tempted to interfere. When we get heifers, THAT'S how I want calving to happen--go away for a couple of hours thinking I've got time yet, no need to worry... and come back to calves running around. Speaking of which, today spent the day at Ottawa Farm Show, and I'm pretty sure we've solidified which breed of heifers we're going to (try to) source for our future meat crosses. Beef Shorthorn are top of the list. LOADS of breeders in Eastern Ontario, lots selling semen and/or embryos, but of course no bottle heifers. Phooie.
Lots of fun at the show looking at all the shiny toys, but I have to say I was disappointed with how poorly small scale farming was catered to overall, and also how poorly local businesses and organizations were represented. Except for cattle clubs and Wool Growers, almost zero local representation. I only found one booth for vegetable seed, and they were a distributor for a company out of Michigan. Sad, really. There were a couple of HOLY CRAP COOL exhibits from Ontario fabricators of small scale specialty equipment, one in particular, a cold press/hammermill/pelletizer combo that turns just about anything into feed pellets, really got the wheels turning and was worth the entire experience, even the five hours of walking and practically having to be pried out of the truck when we got home because my hips had seized up LOL! All in all, we got some ideas solidified and I feel like I've made some sort of forward progress :)
Also got a new bull calf this week, the guy has a couple nannies and needed a billy, he fell in love with Rusty who is a bit of a useless douche as goats go...too small to use for meat/breeding, never warmed up to us at all, very shy and the other goats (his twin brother and the two girls) pick on him. Well, Terry thinks he's the cat's pajamas and traded us another Jersey/Simmental bottle calf for Rusty, even trade. So now FOUR calves. At least the two older ones are off the bottle and growing to beat the band. And of course, they're all named *sigh*, they are Beefsteak, Brisket, Minimoo and MooToo in order of age.

Still in the early gathering stages...Bills have to be paid, and no one wants to accept my offers of 'future maybe money' in return for their products and services. What's up with that anyway? LOL!

Murphy strikes again. Carla took the week off. The plan: we drive from ottawa to London on Tues morn after an appointment, en route make the first "easter bunny" pickup of hatching eggs at Cambridge. The few days before were wacky for me leaving early and getting home late. But Monday Jester's (the pug) eye starts weeping and it has a nice chunk of slime on it. (Eye popped out three weeks ago. Vet put it back in but buggered up since (thank you vet for doing what you can)). So tuesday goes sideways while we try and book an appt with a pet opthamologist. ($350 for the visit? I saw my eye doc a month ago and it was $100!)
Appt is on wed and nut growers event in Simcoe is on wed so I take off tuesday aft flying solo. So much for shared driving. My sis is peed off as she prepped a nice supper and Carla's not coming :-( and i'm gonna be late. My sis is driving back with me (wait till she finds out she's riding w the easter bunny "whaddaya mean we're making 4 stops on the way back? Delivering eggs and sweet potatos?" "Deal with it sis...This is a business trip.")

Bert you definitely did have a rough start to your day!!!

Was good to meet you however brief, would have been nice to sit a chat and have a coffee. Hubby had already read me the riot act, "your meeting a man where? Have you ever met this person" blah, blah, blah!! LOL

Hope the eggs hatch well for you Jocelyn!! :baby ckick:

woke up to singing starlings, cockerels (even the younger squeaky ones are trying to crow), deer in the field, turkeys gobbling in the woods and the barn (wild and mine respectively). it's going to be so hard not turkey hunting this spring. sigh. even if my back is fixed tomorrow i won't be recovered for about 8 months for shooting a shotgun. so looks like hunting is off for me this year.

Tonight i need to package up the rootlets for everyone!! yay! meeting bert tomorrow

and woke up this morning to 3 new fuzzy butts in the incubator, another 2 bronze x red slate poults and a royal palm poult! not quite finished hatching yet-another 2 or so pips. that i can see...of course there might be more that i can't see....

grant to submit. better get working on that. safe trip bert, hope the nut growers thing is awesome today! and i hope Jester's going to be okay.....i also hope murphy didn't follow you-i'm pretty sure his twin brother has been playing in my week already LOL boss is away on vacation, but they moved a grant deadline UP by 3 days, so he'll still be away on submission day. so today will be converting everything from CAD to USD in the budget, signatures, letters of support and editing and proofreading and stuff like that. friday is still 2 days away, so hopefully enough time, but then doctor tomorrow morning, sweet potato shoot delivery sometime, then horse trim and propane tank and line inspection at the house friday afternoon-of course on a scheduled day off, which now will not be a day off, but a day of working between the appointments, and i can tell you from experience that grants do not upload well over satellite internet..LOL....busy busy busy! should be FUN! LOL

oh, buds on trees along the highway this morning. and swans in the field across the river from me. and our local yolkel geese have paired up for nesting....and i heard the first peeper frogs last night!!!! that's EARLY!

10C here, driveway still icy, still afraid to walk on ice, may be turning in to a scardy cat

Enjoyed following the travels and adventures of Easter Bunny, the eggs are guaranteed to hatch!! :)
Shopping for a rain barrel, my "frugal self" says there is an extra Green bin behind the wood shed....
My visually discerning person says, front of the house beside BBQ ? no way am I sitting having alFresco lunch beside a garbage bin whatever new glorified name/job may have been assigned to it.

Jealous of all of you with the birds and frogs of spring. Still lots of snow here but it is melting now. Ice where the snow has been packed instead of mud but signs that it is coming!
